Xp and Windows 7 running from same HDD can this be done?
Hello,
I partitioned my HDD into 2 sections and installed windows xp on the first partition, then installed windows 7 onto the next partition.
I was told that once I did that on boot a option would pop asking to load either windows xp or windows 7
This has not happened and I cannot boot neither because the boot records are not working.
Can anyone suggest the best way this can be done?
Please dont ask why would I want to? I just have too.. Thankyou very much everyone

I has this exact set up for ages doing only recently lost the need for xp so have just gone for a windows 7 instal
The only way i could get it working was to instal windows xp first and then instal windows 7
but sounds like you've tried this from what you say

You need to install easybcd to create a custom boot loader:
http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/
Btw there are plenty of guides for a windows 7/XP dual boot on google ;)

Use XP mode within windows 7?

As above or simply run whatever in compat mode

I recently made a triple boot drive (Xp/7/8) and the way I did it was create 3 partitons first using Hirens Boot CD (Partition Wizard Home Edition 7.0), marking the first partiton Active. You will just need to make the 2.
Then boot from the XP CD and install it onto the first partition.
Then once installed, boot the machine from the Win 7 CD and install to the 2nd partition - do not run setup.exe from within windows XP.
Once this is done, you should get the O/S select at boot-up.
