SATA Controller or Hard Drive Failure?
I have a cheap shit SATA Controller that I expect to be iffy, but not entirely sure.
I have got hold of a 2TB and 1.5TB Hard drive and attached to said controller...
One of the Drives - after moving a lot of Data onto it, reports the 'Drive is no longer available. Please verify the file exists... etc etc'.
I've tested the drives in Windows and both appear fine. So I'm now thinking the SATA Controller is being a bitch.
Anyone any ideas on how I can test this SATA Controller or am I better off just investing in a better one... and if a better one is the option, any recommendation?
Re: SATA Controller or Hard Drive Failure?
invest in a caddy there only a fiver
Re: SATA Controller or Hard Drive Failure?
I thought that, but would prefer the transfer rate for SATA for the drives if I can get away with it rather than USB. All 6 of my SATA ports onboard are being used.
Re: SATA Controller or Hard Drive Failure?
Just looked on ebay I wouldn't go down the caddy line as there all from HK
id phone a friend and see if they work in another system
Re: SATA Controller or Hard Drive Failure?
I can send you 2 shitty sata laptop drives (something like 40-60Gb) to test if you want. PM me your address and I will send them out tomorrow. No point sending back as the postage will probably cost more than the drives are worth :D
I would advise to try new cables as well just in case.
I remember I thought I was going mad a while ago, I wiped my pc and setup from fresh, worked fine for just a few days and it went nuts but all hardware tested fine. Same thing repeated for a few weeks in a row and I realised it kept going wrong the same day, I think I would wake up every Sunday to find my PC had corrupted windows which really baffled me. In the end that was just a bad SATA cable, my theory is when I came in pissed on Saturdays I probably ended up knocking the PC causing an intermittent bad connection.
Re: SATA Controller or Hard Drive Failure?
Thanks for the offer OC, but I have a few drives I can try here. I just want to test the Card moreso, somehow.
But it only really seems to happen when the drive is copying a lot of information to it.
I'm gonna start the process now and see if it flags up and check the error logs for any tell tale signs.
EDIT-
Further investigations result in ID 51 Errors -

Re: SATA Controller or Hard Drive Failure?
Just checked out my Sata Controller and didn't realise how good/popular it is.
It's made by Marvell and is known as a 9230. It's also dated 2013.
I've just checked out the Spin up times on the drive and it's an age. Just trying a full format, then I'll switch one of my onboard drives over to the SATA Card and see if it too starts have similar problems.
Appears to be only one of the drives at the moment (I've since switched SATA Cables too).
Fingers crossed I've sorted it.
