Re: HP Microserver MEGA thread
Need some help please. Currently running an N54L with Xpenology 5.2
I think my time with Xpenology has now run it's course. What should I move to (that's preferably free and legal) that this hardware can handle.
Needs to act as a minimum as a file server, plex server, two-way onedrive sync box. Preferably as raid or equivalent for data safety.
Thanks

Have you thought of ESXi for virtualisation? I'm not sure what the free licence allows. You can use the RAID utility during POST to set up an array.
Re: HP Microserver MEGA thread
Can I ask why you you want to leave xpenology?
i love it! Easy on resources and has everything I could want to install.
lousmorals will be here soon recommending unraid ;)
i must admit it looks good but tbh I can't be arsed to move everything.
Re: HP Microserver MEGA thread
If you had the police take your server how much trouble would you be in?
i have over 700 movies and around 150 tv shows plus music etc.
and I got thinking if for some reason the police came and took my server or I was burgled and police recovered it would I end up in the shit.
Has anyone else thought about any implications with these servers?
Re: HP Microserver MEGA thread
As Xpenology is a bit of a hack I find it a hassle to keep updated with the latest version. I use the Cloud Sync feature but that has a bug in the version in 5.2 that is only fixed in the version available with 6.0 which looks a nightmare tonupdate to.
Am thinking I might as well bite the bullet and move to something less hacky.
Re: HP Microserver MEGA thread
Apparently there can be data loss when updating which scares me too much to update so I'm sticking on 5.2.
You would have the same issue changing OS so I'm a chicken and staying right where I am lol.

Hi
I would like to recommend unRAID lol [emoji23]
To be fair I made change from xpenology for exactly the same reasons as you. Teajunky would too if he wasn't such a chicken

Re: HP Microserver MEGA thread
Hi
Unraid is not free, however I got fed up of the possibility of Xpenology getting stopped by Synology and not being able to do timely updates or use surveillance I was happy to pay- not so many decent options are free legit.
I usually find "free things" are usually far from it in the long run.
