http://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/624/med...ge_large-3.pngPersonal details of up to 2.4m Carphone Warehouse customers may have been accessed in a cyber-attack, the mobile phone retailer says.
Up to 90,000 customers may also have had their encrypted credit card details accessed, it said in a statement.
The affected area operates the OneStopPhoneShop.com, e2save.com and Mobiles.co.uk websites.
It also provides services to iD Mobile, TalkTalk Mobile, Talk Mobile and some Carphone Warehouse customers.
Sebastian James, chief executive of the retailer's owner, Dixons Carphone, said he was "very sorry" over the attack.
"We are, of course, informing anyone that may have been affected, and have put in place additional security measures," the chief executive said.
"We take the security of customer data extremely seriously, and we are very sorry that people have been affected by this attack on our systems."
The company's investigation found that the data could have included names, addresses, dates of birth and bank details.
Dixons Carphone was formed last year by the merger of Carphone Warehouse and Dixons Retail.
In July it reported a 21% jump in profits in its first annual results since the merger that created the mobile phone and electrical goods firm.
In the UK and Ireland, where it trades under the Carphone Warehouse, Currys and PC World names, sales rose by 8%.

They have been ringing me several times a day for a week, I thought it was to offer me an upgrade but will take the call now...

Can't see why it's such a fuss that the data has been hacked - I binned CPW over 10 years ago - they are one of the most unscrupulous, personal data selling cartels I've ever experienced - wouldn't surprise me at all if this hack is just a cover up something like that

CPW database must be big, who hasn't bought something from there in the last 10 years?
I think the 2.1 million records is a very low estimate.
The thing that always struck me is that any kid working in the shop could lookup names, numbers, or by address and get data without going through any checks to establish the customer is in front of them.

and me. They are over priced!
Re: Carphone Warehouse in data breach
Funnily enough I used my credit card for an up front payment a month or so with mobiles.co.uk and came home yesterday from a weekend away to an answer machine message asking me to ring my credit card company. Seems someone tried to buy something online on Friday. Had to confirm it wasn't me and now I've had my card blocked. Only got the email from mobiles.co.uk last night asking me to warn my bank and credit card company.
