Does WAMP come with phpmyadmin etc all installed? I've been a long time fan of Apache2Triad - does everything I want! Might be worth adding as an alternative.

yes, wamp comes with phpmyadmin, apache2triad looks good.

I always use editplus to edit code, it doesn't take up much memory/processor power to have lots of files open.
