Any SEO Wizards out there?
I thought I had a fair idea about this but, clearly, I don't!
Basically - I have been spending a small fortune on Google Adwords for my site to drive traffic. The most popular search keywords (where I was spending most money) was "art jobs". So what I've done to try and get some of that traffic for free was to stick up another site: www.art-jobs.net on which I posted some useful art jobs tips and provided a link and recommendation to visit my main site for which I'm trying to get traffic.
In spite of liberal use of "art jobs" references through the site, headers in relation to art jobs, the site being called "art jobs", title/meta tags etc all having art jobs and lots of links to other relevant art jobs sites - it still is not appearing in the top 250 in Google for those keywords.
My site has been crawled and is on Google but not for what I'm looking for.
I'd be really appreciative if anyone was able to take a look and offer up any advice of what I'm missing.

There are millions of sites covering this topic in a much greater way than here ever could so I would suggest visiting a site such as: http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/

Cheers! I've actually found another thread on here that's been useful too. (for some reason searching for "SEO" didn't come up with any results on DF before I posted!)
Comes down to backlinks I reckon - of which I have none. :-(

Yes backlinks are important but a thing that is missed is length of time a site URL has been up and SEO won't come up as the minimum search string is 4 letters.

some good site analysis tools on http://www.seochat.com/seo-tools/
But if you not got backlinks then give up, back links are key your website might be the best in the world but google will ignore it if its not linked to a decent google ranked site.
Think of it as facebook people usually find you by you being a freind of someone they know well google works like that if you got no friends (no inbound links) then you are no one but it gets worse if you have in bound links from plenty of other no-ones then you will be ignored aswell, you need to get a link from a someone for you not to be a no one. A someone is reportably a site with a google page rank of 3 and above.
The problem is if your site has got a rating of 3 or above the last thing you want to do is risk it getting lowered by linking it to a lower ranked site i.e. yours
