Re: DSLR - Canon V Nikon ?
Nikon for me because its what I am used too.
Although there is probably not a good reason why!
Re: DSLR - Canon V Nikon ?
From memory of the threads over the last few years I am putting all my money on the result being Canon. There's a pretty large Canon fanbase on DF.
Nikon man myself, but I occasionally shoot with a friends Canon and love it, so effectively I swing both ways.
Re: DSLR - Canon V Nikon ?
I would be more than content to shoot with either a Canon or a Nikon as have seen stunning images from both manufacturers.
As it is, I have Canon Kit. To switch to NIKON would be too expensive (unless I could get an adapter and guarantee full AF functionality with my Canon lenses), then I'd need a very big reason to switch to NIKON.
Brand snobbery is just plain dumb and those whom are entrenched in their debate should be put in a little room somewhere to fight it out :D. Same as those whom think that L Series lenses WILL make them a better photographer :D
Re: DSLR - Canon V Nikon ?
Canon and will stay that way as I don't like the control layout on Nikons and have tried the top of the shop Nikons, well the D700 and the D3x. Too much glass investment to shift anyway.
Re: DSLR - Canon V Nikon ?
i went for the canon 7d, because a friend had a canon, didnt even look at comparing makes when i went canon, im sure other makes are just as capable.
Re: DSLR - Canon V Nikon ?
Canon, always has been.
I find Nikon's are more "menu" orientated and therefore less intuitive to use, more so for novice users.
Paul.
Re: DSLR - Canon V Nikon ?
Canon for me, I prefer the layout of buttons wheels etc, thats why I bought a 500D originally it just felt better in my hands that the nikon offerings. I have used a few nikon cameras since and there are just too many buttons on them. The Canon lens range is a lot eaier to understand, any ef lens will work on any EOS camera, EF-s makes the water a little muddy but its a yes or no. With nikon you have other things to take in to consideraion with motors in the body or lens not sure which way to be honest I'm not interested.
When I decided to upgrade to pro bodys I did consider swapping to Nikon as their ISO performace was better on the D3s but hey its full frame over a 1.3 crop so I would have been disapointed if it wasn't. I am happy that I didnt after the D4 AF seems a little inconsistant and the 1Dx is indredible :) just need some spare cash to buy one.
Too much money invested now in the canon system and to be honest I am really happy with what I have, curently saving for a wide angle as I really miss the 10-22 I still have for my 500D just a pain carrying 3 cameras about jsut incase I want wide.
Re: DSLR - Canon V Nikon ?
Nikon here, mostly for the mid-level camera's outperformance of the equivalent Canon's in low light.
All my P&S cameras have always been Canon - have no real bias either way. For me just came down to for what I needed the D7000 was better than the Canon's available at the time in that price range. As others have alluded to - kind of stuck with Nikon now (not that that's a bad thing) unless I want to replace all my lenses.
Re: DSLR - Canon V Nikon ?
Pointless poll as no one invested in either brand is going to vote for the competitor.
A more relevant point is DSLR or mirrorless, personally if I was going to buy a camera from scratch I'd probably get a Nex or a fuji x-e1

Not to mention that ALL brands of DSLR are not represented. . . . as for mirrorless the most innovative and arguably best is once again NOT represented. . .

The thread is entitled "Which DSLR Brand".... not which camera brand!

Indeed, but there must of been a reason why every person initially opted for the brand they have now?

Re: DSLR - Canon V Nikon ?
Worth considering Sony and Olympus. I'm an Olympus user but to be fair some just can't get their head into Four Thirds. . .
For what it's worth if I were to drop Olympus I would go Nikon. . . .
Re: DSLR - Canon V Nikon ?
I've just bought 2 Canons,a 350D,this one I've modded for astro photography by removing the IR filter.I bought the 400D without a lens first with the intention of modding this but found it far to good to mod so found a cheap 350D with a lens on fleabay so made a set out the two.

To be brutally honest, I am seriously considering the extra massive cost of full frame when there is no way that I would really need it - purely on the fact that I am a pretentious cow.... so there is no way on the planet I would consider NOT getting one of the two main titans!
However, I am interested why you would go Nikon?
Re: DSLR - Canon V Nikon ?
In my experience, there is no discernible difference between Nikon and Canon at the top of the range (D3X vs 1DX and D800 vs 5D Mk3) but in the mid range, Nikon appear to have the edge with ISO control and colour management in camera. Nikon used to have less lens choice but I'm not sure these days. Personally, I prefer the Canon controls layout and this, coupled with the fact my brother and a mate both used Canon, were the only reason I went that way.
If I were to choose today, it would be a tough choice.

Really because of an old film camera that I had. Also my Ex has retired from her main career and started as a Photographer, she too was always a Nikon user before digital so is comfortable with them and can use some of her lovely old glass. She has a D700 as her main camera and a 7000 as back up. I love my Olympus and they were always very innovative, apart from some small low light issues they are great and Zuiko lenses are comparable to those offered by the very top Lens Manufacturers. Although I have big hands I like the smaller bodies of 4/3 Cameras (worth looking at Lumix too)
A local repairer who is a Nikon agent told me that in the States Nikon have stopped supplying spares to repair shops instead going the route of return to Nikon for a one price solution, effectively refurbing for the simplest fault. This might happen here so worth thinking about.
Have a good look at the top review sites (DP etc.) because you might get a surprise with what is written about Sony, Olympus and Lumix.
