Funny but I must have missed a bit, I understand how he set it to go through an internal dial by pressing a number but how did he differentiate between real call and tele marketer when he had the recorded messages?

The constant repetition of "aha", "ok" and "mmhhmm" would make me twig straight away though but then I'm not a scammer.

I think its semi automated with white lists. So known numbers such as family and friends (callerID) are all on the white list & known black list scam numbers are on the black list. The black list is possibly updated manually, but also has some kind of automation which can be revised when checking the logs.
That is only my guess on it however.

It's getting there for sure, but if you had switched-on scammer they would spot these soon enough due to the wrong responses. It will be great one day but not right now.
