Re: How to Get 1080 or 720p MKV files Bluray compliant (UPDATED NOV 2008)
i have used AVCHDCoderBeta2.23
with fantastic results.
works great on ps3 & on other blu-ray players.i have busned to br-25gb , dual layer & standard dvd-r
link http://tools.twanwintjes.nl/index.php?page=avchdcoder
you need a few tools installed but with them you only use AVCHD coder.
yes they can take upto 20 hours on a dual core 8 gb ram, vista home prem,3.5 tb hard drives, 5600 d/core,liteon blu-ray rom & LG blu-ray writter
i find the 1080 took longest.720 about 10 hours
perfect every time on any media.
it creates an img to burn to what disc you want.
the software gives choice of cat5, cat9, blu-ray25
my pc will convert & i can still use it to play online or view other movies at the same time

works like a charm mate, and the guy who wrote it always improving it
repacks 720p episode of heroes in 10 seconds on my pc.
u can set it to split the files to whatever format and size u like too
so if u so wish, u could select avchd , 4.7g,9gig or 25gig.
Re: How to Get 1080 or 720p MKV files Bluray compliant (UPDATED NOV 2008)
i dont get why your all doing this if your watching stuff on the ps3 theres much easier ways,
download ps3 media server from http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/ once installed add the folder with the mkv's or any others that you want to watch, then go watch them on the ps3, its never missed a beat for me no sync issues, lag or anything
Re: How to Get 1080 or 720p MKV files Bluray compliant (UPDATED NOV 2008)
that program is designed for streaming, it transcodes them, and relies on you have a decent pc and a totally stable network connection
if you have those, yes its great program. i have both of them installed
there is a loss of quality if you transcode though, whereas mkv2vob's repacks are losless in quality.
Re: How to Get 1080 or 720p MKV files Bluray compliant (UPDATED NOV 2008)
yeah i know about the transcode but to be honest theres no difference between the transcoded version and one thats gone through mkv2vob, and for the ease of use and time saved its cracking, although as you say it needs a stable system although anything about 2ghz should be ok even if its a single core and decent network, i certainly wouldnt recommed running this over wireless it would be terrible, (i sometimes forget not everone wires cat5e all way through the house including the upstairs lol)
Re: How to Get 1080 or 720p MKV files Bluray compliant (UPDATED NOV 2008)
on my system i can see pixellation using the ps3mediaserver when streaming mkv, if i get close to the screen, a good example is on opening credits where there is a defined colour against a black background. i dont get this with mkv2vob. tbh its not that noticeable during normal viewing.
im a picky yes :-)
Re: How to Get 1080 or 720p MKV files Bluray compliant (UPDATED NOV 2008)
lol maybe im not so picky,
Re: How to Get 1080 or 720p MKV files Bluray compliant (UPDATED NOV 2008)
I'm investing in a 1TB HD for my PS3 on friday purely for HD Films from MKV's.
As I've read, the PS3 still DOESNT support MKV's. So after reading this, in order to keep the clarity of the films I would need to convert them using the program above into ACVCH correct?
Now, most films I have are 4.7GB each at 720p. If I convert them, will the file size increase. Does the program auto split large files to support smaller file sizes for Fat 32. I dont think this will matter too much as the external drive is going to be NTFS anyway.
I'm guessing 4.7Gb for a 4.7 MKV... 8.5Gb for a 8.5Gb MKV and so on...?
--EDIT--
May possibly go to a 2TB (seeing as I've just seen they are available) should the PS3 be able to handle it...?
Re: How to Get 1080 or 720p MKV files Bluray compliant (UPDATED NOV 2008)
if they are 720p, run them thru mkv2vob, takes seconds and your ps3 will play them with no quality loss
u can output them to disc, usb stick or stream them
they are not transcoded if 720p - just repackaged to trick the ps3 into playing them
new version also retains dts.
its great, i use it every day
Re: How to Get 1080 or 720p MKV files Bluray compliant (UPDATED NOV 2008)
@DejaVu
I don't think the ps3 can access NTFS formatted drives.

Re: How to Get 1080 or 720p MKV files Bluray compliant (UPDATED NOV 2008)
no fat only.
i have a one tb drive with all my shit on
connected via my win 7 pc
and ps3 media server
no transcode, no loss of quality
yes mkv2vob auto splits into 4gb chunks
file size doesnt change usually unless u transode
Re: How to Get 1080 or 720p MKV files Bluray compliant (UPDATED NOV 2008)
I'm totally confused and lost. Pretty new to this video conversion lark.
Can anyone explain the whole procedure and how the folder structure would look on my PS3 external drive.
From what I've read, I can only but one AVCHD folder onto the disk, which must be in the root directory.
I'm thinking of making this a HD XVid and splitting it into 4GB chunks and using a PLS file to run it should this not work correctly.
Re: How to Get 1080 or 720p MKV files Bluray compliant (UPDATED NOV 2008)
are u planning on connecting the drive via a network or pc? or straight to the ps3?
i've no idea what pls file etc is mate sorry
i have a drive , set up for sharing in ps3 media server (or u can use win media player) connected to my pc on my network
which has all my converterted 720p stuff on
takes about 2mins to "convert" a 720 movie on my pc btw . and its nothing special
why dont u just download mkv2vob & ps3 media server and have a play
piece of piss to use
http://www.mkv2vob.com/
http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/
trust me, easy to use or i wouldnt bother :-)
Re: How to Get 1080 or 720p MKV files Bluray compliant (UPDATED NOV 2008)
I've been using PS3 Media Server for the past few months, but I'm about to invest in a 1TB HDD that will live permanently next to my PS3. I want to be able to turn off the PC when watching movies.
Ultimately, the USB 1TB drive will contain all the files, hence, no longer able/the need to transocde over the network. This is why the files I have, which are all MKV's would need to be Playstation compliant. I'm guessing they would need to be MPG-2 and not over 4GB - meaning they would be split into 2 parts.
The PLS file is simply a Play List file that will tell the PS3 the locations of the files so no need to search for the other part half way through a film. It'll just seamless jump to the next part of teh film. Similar to a M3U file I suppose.
Re: How to Get 1080 or 720p MKV files Bluray compliant (UPDATED NOV 2008)
yeah i read about those now i rem , why dont u have a nosey in the forums for those progs, lots of people doing what you require .
you def have to have the files split into 4gb chunks
that much is sure. mkv2vob will create the files u need too, sure of that, with no quality loss
btw ps3 media server does not transcode files that have been created by mkv2vob, in fact, it doesnt transcode any that have native ps3 support, if u didnt know
thats why i stuck with this setup, as i dont have to chop the files up and i dont transcode. agree would be handy to have the pc off sometimes
