Acer D255 wireless issue with Win7 home edition - not the usual..
Have upgraded this netbook from xp to win7, and it has the usual wireless connection issue, google to see the heartache. It had the usual wired and wireless connection issue that was solved by getting the correct drivers from acer. But now the wireless seems to work for a while and then stop working, The bios has been updated to the latest which seems to have a few power options for the PCI slots onboard.
Any ideas where to look next to solve this problem.
Was thinking of going to win8.1 but don't think that the 1gb ram will be enough to run quickly.

So it connects to a network then disconnects? Will it let you reconnect? Have you tried different wireless networks?
Or or does it connect but not allow Internet access? Can you access the router control panel or ping local IPs?

Ah it is as if the network card is switched off as it doesn't see any networks.
Will get some screen grabs tomorrow to show.

You will need to explain better , what wifi card is it ?
Re: Acer D255 wireless issue with Win7 home edition - not the usual..
Got exactly the same thing with a Dell XPS Laptop very recently. Change the Wifi card or just buy a USB Wifi Dongle from eBay.
At first, I thought it was the shit BT HH5 Router, but turned out to be the wifi card in the laptop. Changed it, now its perfect again.
It's usually going to be driver related and Windows will always install the latest drivers from Window Update.
If those latest drivers are fucked (which happens a lot), you'll get the symptoms your describing. You could also try rolling back the driver if a previous one was installed.

DejaVu is right and I had the same problem with a Acer laptop which I ended giving it back and got a different laptop, the wifi card was shitty ... Also, the usb Wifi Dongle might be your best bet . I know this one is really good I have used it in the past and the reviews say it is good to, have a look if your interested .. Asus N13 usb wifi adapter
Re: Acer D255 wireless issue with Win7 home edition - not the usual..
Could also be the wireless config software conflicting with windows wireless client?b3
Re: Acer D255 wireless issue with Win7 home edition - not the usual..
Ok have tried linux mint on the laptop and it works fine. So the card isn't at fault.
The drivers have been updated and are available from atheros v10 over version 9 on the acer website. All this does not work.
The wireless card is an atheros ar9285.
When the computer is turned on or re booted the wireless card works for a short time, enough time to see the wireless networks and connect to wireless networks. Then, as if the wireless card is switched off as it can no longer connect to a wireless networks the wireless network icon has a http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/p.../c03958918.jpg then no connections avaiable. Turning the card on and off, via the fn button, does not change anything.

Atheros Windows Drivers are fucked.
Linux ones work, probably because they haven't been updated recently. Not needed so much with Linux. Less vulnerabilities.
Have you tried older versions of the Wireless Driver. Even try the Vista or XP ones. Sometimes these will also work with Windows 7.
Really, you have answered your own question. Works for a short while, then stops.
Windows is updating the signed drivers automatically (IMO) and breaking it.
Try a Roll Back on it. If the option is greyed out, it's still the originally installed driver (from the Wnidows DVD) and rules out updating.

The light changes from illuminated to not...and the wireless doesn't work in either state.

Wish I could use linux on this laptop as it would save so much hassle, unfortunatly needs to be microsoft for office.
Unfortunatly wireless doesn't work, out of the box, you have to install drivers for both the built in network card as well as the wireless card from the acer website. Strange thing is that it worked for a while, a day or two. After lots of updates the laptop was working fine. The driver that the laptop is running is 7/8/8.1 so should be fine as the win8 runs fine out of the box for the laptop.
Re: Acer D255 wireless issue with Win7 home edition - not the usual..
Go to the windows tab, click in the search and type services.msc , scroll down to wlan config and toggle the stop start ... just a thought to see if it brings the card back into operation? b3
Re: Acer D255 wireless issue with Win7 home edition - not the usual..
There should be no need to install the Acer wireless manager (assuming that's what it is) as wondows can handle wireless connections just fine. But certainly sounds like a driver issue or software conflict, can you try in safe mode with networking or set it to diagnostic start up in msconfig?
Re: Acer D255 wireless issue with Win7 home edition - not the usual..
Having a look round last night I found a broadcom bcm43225 card so installed that and used the lenovo driver for windows 7 after fully re installing win 7. This time the light showing that the wireless card is working doesnt work but still have the same problem. Wondering if I should video me at play and see if it is anything obvious.
Will win8 work on an atom cpu and 1gb ram?
Re: Acer D255 wireless issue with Win7 home edition - not the usual..
It will, but it'll be slow as shit.
Re: Acer D255 wireless issue with Win7 home edition - not the usual..
Do you get a signal if you put the lt right next to the AP ?
send your addy in a pm and I'll send you a card , a bcm biased card .
you should allso try installing the vista driver , for the card . Extract it from the cab file and install it manually .
Re: Acer D255 wireless issue with Win7 home edition - not the usual..
Thank you for the offer, but am sure it is not the card but a software issue. Seems to be lots of issues with several repair solutions. Just need to go through them.
Still not working but going through things, try the ip/release thing. will post up details.
Re: Acer D255 wireless issue with Win7 home edition - not the usual..
What ops , did the system come with . Use the same driver if it's a longhorn driver it will work.
Just disable driver sig or extract the files from the msi or what ever package it's wrapped in and force the install.
