a new job offer offshore..
I've been in my job for 10years, get well paid, but monday to friday long hours takes a toll and Im getting fed up, want more time off. Ive just turned 40 and must be having a crisis or something.
So I upload my CV after seeing a job that I'm qualified for on paper last thursday. yesterday I get an email, wanting to set up a conference call to discuss for 9am tuesday ( today).
I had that this morning.
1.5hours of conversation and grilling later, call ends, and I'm told I be informed yay or nay by the weeks end.
40 minutes later, they offer me the job. and I thought I fooked the interview right up when my mind went blank on codes we use for inspections.
I can stay ltd co. 2 on / 2 off. and uplift of £20k a year, after VAT and corp tax paid.
I love my job, though a bit boring, love the people here too, but I feel like I am capable of much more. and this is a promotion. my kids are older now, we want to move house etc.. got some serious deliberation to do.
what would you guys do?? I'm still in shock at the offer IT hink, as I really thought I had no chance.
Re: a new job offer offshore..
20k a year for an offshore job? why so little if you dont mind me asking?
Re: a new job offer offshore..
the rotation seems good, i do 4 on 4 off. i felt that with 2 on 2 off, you can hardly plan anything before you are away again
take into account you miss out on a lot with an offshore life

Think he meant its a 20k payrise
Re: a new job offer offshore..
yep, 20k uplift on my current salary.
i hav to factor in what I would miss out on I know.
but my kids are 18 and 11 now, not exactly babies, but I am home every night and see them every day.
need to discuss with the family tonight, but the financial gains alone are huge really.
Re: a new job offer offshore..
I've accepted the job. and given my current employers 4 weeks notice.
fookin hell. hardly slept last night thinking I've either just made a great decision or just made a massive mistake!
Re: a new job offer offshore..
Sounds like you made the right decision. They grilled you for 1.5 hours, so they know you can do it.
Let the good times roll.
Re: a new job offer offshore..
yeah it will be a culture shock but sometimes you got to take the plunge as they say a change is as good as a rest.
I work for a company as a Dev at the mo but I have been offered a 12 month contract on a day rate for another company and this is a £20k+ payrise but the thing is its only 12 months I know it is likely to be extended but its the fear of a finite employment date that is worrying me, I am sure I will find another job/or contract at the end of this but like you it is actually deciding to jump from safety into the unknown :-S
Re: a new job offer offshore..
yeah, I currently have long term employment ( 5years +) if I stayed here. one of my questions was length of contract as I have long term already.
its as long as I want the job basically, and as long as there is a need for gas, they need somewhere to store it, so the job is always gonna be there.

Re: a new job offer offshore..
my notice was officially handed in last week.
my last day is 26th September, so I cant be fairer than giving 4 weeks. plus I didnt want to just walk out and leave a job like that.
double plus, I've spent a year planning the work for the current ongoing shutdown, so have to see it through.
seems as though I've decided to move on at the right time.
there are big cost cutting exercises going on in aberdeen at the mo, and I've now found out that I am not being replaced, my workload and duties are going to be filtered out to others on the team to take on. SO did I go before I was pushed....I didnt get an honest answer to that question from management!
Re: a new job offer offshore..
Soooo, here we are at last. how a month does fly.
my last day at work tomorrow, the end of 10 years.
then a weekend off before the new offshore chapter begins.
life really does begin at 40.. I hope anyway.
Re: a new job offer offshore..
Good luck and all the best. Always a step into the unknown but I hope it works out.
Re: a new job offer offshore..
Good luck, hope it all goes well for you
Re: a new job offer offshore..
Good luck m8! Don't forget to take some porn on your laptop the internet can be a bit doggy offshore !
Re: a new job offer offshore..
Best of luck bud and 6 years ago I was in the same boat as you in two minds weather to move or stay in the same job after 6 years.
Guess what..... I moved and been at this employer for coming up 6 years so time does indeed fly.
Good luck.
Re: a new job offer offshore..
cheers guys.
I know its the right decision for me and my family.
Re: a new job offer offshore..
Whats expected on your first day? Do you turn up with suitcase and disappear for a few months. As i don't know much about this industry be nice to have a rough picture.
If you don't reply for a while, then i guess your on the way.
Re: a new job offer offshore..
Hi guys.
I've only just received a login to ge ton internet ( still waiting for database access etc to actually update things for work though...) but I thought i'd update and say that I have 2 days left on this trip, my first foray into offshore life. and apart from the uncomfortable bunk bed, I've enjoyed it immensely, and think I definitely made the right choice in leaving my old job.
the people are friendly, well most are anyway, the food is fantastic. the pay is good.
I didn't enjoy the chopper ride the other night though, we got delayed for fog, so didn't fly until 8:30pm, still foggy, just not thick, and blowing a gale. my arse nipped a little.
and I get a check in time in Tuesday to fly home at 9am, so I will be home before lunch - if the weather is kind.
Re: a new job offer offshore..
Congrats on the move. so many walk the walk and living where you are will mean very little commuting. Sounds like in due course 'natural wastage' was around the corner. Btw with the wage rise get a retirement plan sorted!
