Need help with daughters laptop
Anyone have any skills repairing laptops?
My daughter has an HP laptop only 2 years old and it wont power on at all no lights nothing :(
We have bought a new power supply but no difference.
If you can help please shout shes pretty desperate as she needs it for college work and is sat in garage using my pc as a temp fix.
Re: Need help with daughters laptop
Many laptops suffer from problems with the connector for the power supply.
I've seen laptops with broken pins/plastic in the connector, and I've also repaired laptops where the connector solder has broken from the motherboard or the small wires from connector to mobo broke.
If you are happy opening it up and have a soldering iron it's worth a shot.
Re: Need help with daughters laptop
That'd be my guess... and TJ, with your skills with a soldering iron, this will be a doddle.
That being said, have you got an original power adpator or one of these mickey mouse ones?
Also, plug into the wall, switch the power off. Hold the power button for 30 seconds to destatic the motherboard. Try again as normal.
Re: Need help with daughters laptop
You've probably already tried this but have you removed power AND the battery at the same time for a short while?
Re: Need help with daughters laptop
Also a model number helps !
Re: Need help with daughters laptop
More than likely its the barrel PSu connector within the laptop. Depending upon the make/model some are alot easier to replace than others. Some Acer's for example, dont require any soldering at all & are connected internally using a fly lead from the m/b to the female barrel connector.

Tried all the above :(
Yes power supply is a ebay replacement but charging light is on fine and goes blue to show full charge.
I have opened it up but cant see any broken solder joints or bad connections.
The power socket is separate to the MB and nothing inside of it :(
I guess its more hassle than its worth trying to repair it then?
its an HP Protect smart 15-n090sa

In that case I would guess Mobo sadly !
Re: Need help with daughters laptop
Static build up on Mobo? All laptops safe guard against power surge if too much static on the board.
Or potentially been getting too hot over time? Reflow?
Re: Need help with daughters laptop
Yes thought it may be the case of dead MB.
Cant seem to find one anywhere cheap.
Will have to take a stroll down local curry's or john lewis tomorrow then.
Thanks guys.

Dell is supposed to have an i3 for sale on Black Friday for £199, if you have a bigger budget eBuyer have some decent spec HPs on their Black Friday week.

Tip, If u see one on Dell u like, go onto online live chat and tell them your interested but not at that price. Dell will instantly knock off 10% ;)
Re: Need help with daughters laptop
Done a few where the bios has to be flashed, you have to remove the chip and flash with a programmer then resolder it back on, bit of a job but worth it if the laptop's still worth a bit.
Re: Need help with daughters laptop
Did it tell you the warranty length? If it said a year then you may be covered by EU legislation for 2 years but I can't remember the details about whether it's the retailer or manufacturer you chase up.
