Humax DTR-T1010/500GB YouView box - anyone used one yet?
Hi DF guys
I am thinking of splashing out....but at close to £300 for a PVR I feel its a bit steep because it will probably be redundant in 12-18 months...but it does have BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD, Demand 5 which no other box I have seen offers this...
The HDR- Fox T2 at £160 (Manager Specials) is a better deal but only offers BBC iPlayer...
Has anyone used the TalkTalk Youview boxes yet? I've not seen them in the flesh....they can be had for approx £90 on fleabay but obviously no warranty or anything like that...
If you go to the Humax Direct website you can see the specs.
Thanks

Hi TheFincher
those are FreeSat boxes - so they only work with Satellite Dishes and not a basic tv aerial like the ones I linked to.
I've just moved house, and the new place didn't have a dish, and I wasn't for Sky again....they won't be getting anymore of my hard earned cash!
Re: Humax DTR-T1010/500GB YouView box - anyone used one yet?
Been given one of the Youview 1010 boxes to try out.
Easy to setup, menu seems a little laggy.
Is a good little machine but seems to lose channels from time to time, the catch up channels are very slow , but the two things that are a pain are the machines noisy and that it doesnt seem to have a channel back button so you have to click guide then go from there.
Have only used it 7 days but wont what to have paid £300 for it.

I've had the Fox T2 for about 2 years and it's still going well, I stuck custom firmware on it and it makes a huge difference.
Check out the custom firmware @ hummy.tv
MOD: If the link is not allowed please remove, I have no association with them.
Re: Humax DTR-T1010/500GB YouView box - anyone used one yet?
Yes £300 seems steep, I didn't think it was worth it at the time, and I had the money to spend on it.
Rhinoz, I've not checked out the custom firmware yet, but the stock firmware seems pretty solid for what i need it to do. It even plays MKVs from USB, which my Xbox 360 freaks out at. I will take a look at hummy.tv though. In what way does it make a huge difference?
Re: Humax DTR-T1010/500GB YouView box - anyone used one yet?
The Custom Software provides a web browser interface to your Humax HDR-FOX T2, accessed via your home network and the HDR-FOX Ethernet port. The web interface replicates some of the media management functions from the handset (move/copy, create/delete folders etc), but also extends those abilities by offering functions such as decryption (ie remove DRM), conversion to MPG, or extraction of an MP3 soundtrack.
Retuning the standard HDR-FOX loses your current recording schedule, but the custom software automatically backs it up and allows you to restore it after the retune.
Some facilities can be automated and triggered on a regular schedule or when a recording has been made: for instance, series recordings that would normally be sent to a series folder can be set to flatten into the top level (if the user wishes), or pushed down to lower folders (send kid's programmes to a "KIDS" folder, for example).
By linking your HDR-FOX to an external web service, remote viewing of your EPG and the ability to set up recordings becomes possible from anywhere you can get Internet access.
I'm also a big fan of the undelete script that allows you to automatically move deleted stuff to deleted folder when deleted where it will be permanently deleted after a set time, I have it set at 1 day but can be set upto 7 days.
There is also a mount script that mounts my NAS as a USB device, this then plays more formats than playing from the network.
You can also save anything streamed from YouTube or Iplayer to the hard drive of the Humax where it will be available as a recording in your library.
The above examples are just a few of the extras available by installing the Custom Software. The Custom Software does not interfere with the normal day to day operation of the HDR-FOX, and you will see no difference to the user interface on the TV screen other than the custom TV portal, which is an optional install. Except under very specific circumstances, all interaction with the Custom Software where necessary is by way of the web browser interface and your PC or other computing device.
I hope this helps.

Incorrect!
On 7 March 2011, Sugar replaced Kip Meek on the board of the BBC initiated IPTV project known as YouView (formerly known as Project Canvas) which is also backed by ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 and broadband providers including BT and TalkTalk. Sugar was paid 500,000 pounds for chairing YouView for the year ending March 2012.
Humax makes 2 of the 3 YouView boxes whilst Huawei makes the third.
Re: Humax DTR-T1010/500GB YouView box - anyone used one yet?
Huawei - pronounced " Who Are We" Indeed, If I'd known Mr Sugar had anything to do with it I'd have run a mile. The huawei Youview box is poor cheapo version of the Humax model. I got one for free with a £50.00 'engineers delivery'. He knew very little about IT or networking, and I had to restrain him from connecting the ether cable until I knew what the IP address was. The default would have conflicted .
The terrestial unit was endure for about a month until my wife insisted it was removed, and replaced by a Humax Satellite receiver, which I set up - without an engineer
This model is able to operate the various 'on demand' services better and easier than the 'free box'. The satellite picture is sharper than terrestial
Once again proving there is no such thing as a free lunch!
