New SSD drive keeps freezing Windows 7.
I recently got a new Motherboard and Chip and decided to get myself my first SSD to run Windows 7 on.
Installed Windows 7 without a hitch in AHCI Mode and the BIOS had no problem finding it.
However, it's been in about 3 days and I'm getting hangs at least 3 times a day.
Do I need to run it in IDE Mode (I'm new to the world of SSD)?
It's an OCZ Vertex Plus R2 if that makes any difference.
I know early SSD's had some issues but I'm not sure if this was one of them.
Any ideas?
--EDIT
Forgot to add that everything was running fine on a conventional 500GB SATA Drive.
Re: New SSD drive keeps freezing Windows 7.
do make sure it's on the latest firmware. Other than that there shouldn't be any issues afaik
Re: New SSD drive keeps freezing Windows 7.
I did check for a newer firmware just in case and only came up with this answer -
http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/fo...rmware-upgrade
Now I'm wondering if it is screwed. :(
Re: New SSD drive keeps freezing Windows 7.
Swap ports and unplug everything else, - I always install windows without any other devices (sata2/3) plugged in when it comes to ssd's as they can be fussy.
Also did you install in achi mode or did you install in ide and use regedit to make the change later and then switch to achi.
Re: New SSD drive keeps freezing Windows 7.
I unplugged everything when installing and it was in AHCI Mode originally. Didn't make any reg edits.
I have 3 SATA Drives and a SSD Drive plugged into this board.
What mode is best to run these things on AHCI or IDE? I would figure AHCI?
I updated my BIOS on my motherboard to the latest version.
F4 - because it has 'Improved SSD Compatibility' and 'Update AHCI ROM 3.1.0.0'.
Whatever that's meant to do.
Re: New SSD drive keeps freezing Windows 7.
Achi best but some older boards play up even when supported. Try a re install if still play up ditch it n get a m4 all imo

Did you do a fresh install? AHCI is what you want.
FWIW I can recommend the Crucial M4, OCZ Agility 3 (not keen on most OCZ memory products but these seem ok) or the Intel drives. Might be worth returning it if possible and getting one of these models. I assume your new mobo has SATA3, you want a SATA3 SSD if this is the case and a SATA3 cable as the speeds can be tremendous.
If you want to test your speeds install CrystalDiskMark and post the results.

Seeing as I have no clue what any of this means (apart from perhaps the Power On count and Power On Hours)
This is what I've got -

For the price I got this for, I'm more that happy with the transfer speeds, just want to make it reliable!!
Re: New SSD drive keeps freezing Windows 7.
Cables are all thr same so dont worry bout that (sorry but they are) u might br happy with price but it means jack if not reliable bud.

Re: New SSD drive keeps freezing Windows 7.
That's CrystalDiskInfo not CrystalDiskMark ;)
I thought the cables were the same but I ran a test using my M4 on CDM and the bench was affected when using an old SATA2 and new SATA3 cable. Might be mistaken though...
Re: New SSD drive keeps freezing Windows 7.
Oh right, must admit i got black and grey with last motherboard but black had angled connectors. Did not think it could be a speed thing. I may be wrong then.

Re: New SSD drive keeps freezing Windows 7.
Angled is usually to help with ODD or HDD depending on orientation inside your case. Most cables shipped with new mobos (Onboard SATA3) are fine with SATA3 devices. When I am building a custom PC with SSD I search the text on the SATA cable on google to find out if it is SATA3 rated, that is if the manual just states SATA cable with no indication of speed.
Again I may be mistaken but I thought I had tried in the past to test the theory. This looks like the outline to manufacturers, looks like from SATA 2.6 the cables would support 6GB/s, prior to that probably wouldn't so new cables probs no difference, reusing old cables would probs make a difference :) http://www.serialata.org/documents/S...bs-to-6gbs.pdf

Right, now I've come to the conclusion I'm dyslexic - this should be the results you mean.
Looks pretty good to me for the drive (SATA2 @3Gb/s), but I'm clueless with this business!

Everything seems in order and the PC has speeded up loads. I'm not expecting supersonic speeds, but I'm happy that my machine is no longer bottle necked by the drive...

Really, I just want to find out why Windows is crashing and if there is anything I can do to prevent it from happening.
Event Log just reports that Windows last shutdown was unexpected (when I power it off).
Re: New SSD drive keeps freezing Windows 7.
Have you ran WhoCrashed to see if it highlights a driver fault? I would check that all drivers are up to date, latest BIOS, latest SSD FW, try other ports and another cable. Check cables are seated correctly and consider swapping out the RAM as this is cheap and easy to test. In my experience Memtest passes RAM too often when RAM is at fault so I don't like to rely on apps like that.
