Exchange email error 0x80040115
Having a problem with this, was working fine for over a year but now getting this error fairly regularly.
Office network connected to SBS2011 domain
Using hosted exchange with Outlook on the systems
Occasionally Outlook will not send/receive messages - error (0x80040115)
I am certain it is to do with the DNS, I think the mailserver IP is being cached and when the mailserver IP changes Outlook is connecting to the old IP
ipconfig /flushdns on the clients doesn't usually remedy but rebooting the Draytek router does
So my question is do you think I am right, and if so is it the DC that is caching the DNS? Does rebooting the router cause the DC to update?
I need to look at my client ipconfig /all to confirm what DNS servers they are using (pretty sure it will be the DC IP) but if I flush them and they still pick up the wrong IP I assume it must be the DC, can't see the router caching and I don't have the same problems here with same router and same hosted exchange provider (with no DC).
Would I exclude the mailserver domain from caching or set it to update on a more frequent basis?
Cheers

When you get the issue have you done an ipconfig /displaydns to see what it's resolving it to?
Re: Exchange email error 0x80040115
I'll try that next time mate. This isn't something I've come across before with such regularity so I'm not sure what the best fix would be. If I were to exclude the autodiscover address from the cache I'm not sure what the knock on effect would be. I assume it's only looked up upon launching Outlook or if the connection to the mailserver is dropped so shouldn't affect things too much if it looked it up each time it was requested. About 25-30 users at this office.

Ok so today we had same symptoms, Outlook suddenly stops sending mail and it gets stuck in the outbox. I rebooted the router but it did not help, rebooting the PC did.
On another PC which was still experiencing the problem (as it hadn't been rebooted) I ran ipconfig /displaydns and got the following:
Code:
autodiscover.theirdomain.com

I then changed the NIC DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and restarted Outlook - same issue. I then changed the entire IPv4 setup on the NIC to a valid IP, subnet mask, gateway was set to the router and DNS was Google public DNS and Outlook started working. Changed back to auto in IPv4 and Outlook continued to work.
Scratching my head a bit as I spoke to Rackspace tech support who I sent the tracert and ping responses and they said it all looked fine.
Another thing I noticed, I could access the Rackspace portal to sign into their web access (apps.rackspace.com), once I signed in the URL changed to mex09.emailsrvr.com/owa (or similar) bt the page would not display. Cleared cache, tried another browser, flushed then registered DNS but wouldn't work until the NIC was reset. Any ideas what it could be? I'm pretty sure it is to do with the domain controller, but the two different IPs in the displayDNS above may also be the problem.
