new to smokers.

I'm a dab hand on the old bbg, but never used a smoker, I've been given this smoker, won it at work, would like to give it a try but don't know anything about it, Obviously its a cheap, probably rubbish one judging by the instruction translations.

what kind of attention do you have to give it, ie do I need a thermometer? I have got a IR one that I use for other projects.


Is there a recipe that is pretty fool proof and generally comes up trumps ?

A brisket one would be good.

Typo or bar b grill?

They all work pretty much the same these bullet smokers, lit charcoal with a chunk or two of wood, water pan on top to act as a heat sink to stablise the temp and to keep the chamber moist then meat on grate(s) above.
For someone starting I would suggest one of the fruit woods as these give a milder smoke flavour, you'd do well with apple imo.
Pulled pork is a very easy to do off the bat for a first smoke as pork is very forgiving and yo-yoing temp won't hurt it.

That looks like a Meco 3051. I think they retail in the UK for £120. I looked at one of these for a friend but he went with a Brinkmann in the end. The're not bad, the design is ok but the steel is a little thin. It will do the job though and if you keep it clean and out of the rain it will last for a few years until the charcoal grate and charcoal pan rot out. If your handy with a welder and feel a little creative you could reinforce or modify the pan and grate. Everything above fire level should be good for years.
