Default Someone recommend me a VPN

I haven't bothered with VPN's in the past but I don't particularly like the governments new snooping bill coming in to play soon so I think it's now ti,e to look into these. I'm not too clued up on them though so need some advice.

I've been looking at NordVPN which is based in Panama I believe. What's the opinions on this one?

I have a firebox and firestick which I use for Kodi and an IPTV. I have a PC and two laptops that I'd also keep out of prying eyes. I understand VPN's only block one piece of hardware and if I wanted to block all I'd have to use a router that accepts VPN settings. If this is the case which one do you recommend?

I use PIA but you may want to take a look through here, had I known about this I may have chose another as PIA are based in the US with servers around the world:

I think this is something that is getting more and more popular. I used in the past but had a break and the Snoopers Bill reminded me to start over.

Perhaps admin might sticky this thread so we could keep updates on good bad experiences going forward.

So far. Initially I thought ill of PIA but in hindsight didnt give them enough of a chance and when I gave it some time they work well.
Also AirVPN.org <-- these only use OpenVPN as they claim the other methods are insecure. Nice site and nice script generator to create the .ovpn files including username and password so you dont have to keep typing em in everytime you try a new script.
Tried cactus VPN but could not get torrents working.

My fave so far is AirVPN as it beats PIA on speed for me. Getting about 35MB via router and more if you setup per device not via router.

Edit: not tonight it dont.... Getting 6MB down from AirVPN and a solid 50MB from PIA hmmmmmmmm

I would think more about more solid doors and incineration places for hdds. I'm beginning to wonder how good VPNS will be in the coming war...

What are people thoughts on running your own VPN server ??

Do you need monster upload speeds? Is it too resource hungry etc.
    Never looked into it personally.

    On BT Infinty 2

    No VPN : 79MB / 20MB

PIA London : Varies but 50MB seems to be the max. 16MB Up

Is that using the VPN on your router or the client app on a device? Would be interesting to turn the VPN off on the router and test on a PC using the client app to see the results.

Yes that was using client app NOT router. Router gets about 30ish down on PIA.

Tried setting my router up as OpenVPN server out of curiosity and get 50MB using it as my own VPN server. Anyone know the advantages/disadvantages of this?
Obviously My IP and location will remain completely visible, so is it purely encrypting / de-crypting everything? So My ISP will have no idea of the content of my traffic.

Never tried it before but it felt very satisfying lol

Edit: After more thought this method has to be useless other than lan traffic? It will still be unencrypted traffic between my router & ISP surely ????

Have a read of https://tinyurl.com/q8etq87 - I believe the last section is what you are currently doing, but what you want to is to setup your router as a VPN 'client' so that it tunnels the traffic of your local clients out to the internet.

Once setup https://tinyurl.com/pghadfh is your friend.

    +1 AirVPN

You misunderstood me I am just playing around with different setups atm and testing different scenarios. I am well aware the difference between client and server ;-) Thanks anyway

Thanks for the replies guys. I've had manflu hence the delay in replying.

It seems the bill was blocked today in the EU but I don't believe for a minute they aren't doing it already having watched the 'Snowden' movie. Another thing I didn't consider is speed. I wasn't aware it affected broadband speed so I'll need to consider that.

It looks like PIA and AirVpn are two to consider but can someone confirm where their servers are based. Someone said PIA are based in the US while someone else said Switzerland.

PIA have UK servers in both London & Southampton.

AirVPN also have UK servers. Still got both atm as I got a month from both to compare. After initial issues with PIA I am now consistently getting better speeds with them... by quite a lot !

What kind of speeds out of interest, and how are you finding PIA against Air?
