    Advice Double Din Stereo/Nav

Just got myself a VW t5 Caravelle (57plate) absolutely love the thing but the double din Stereo/Nav/Dvd unit is well and truly borked! The touch screen is completely unresponsive! Managed to barter £500 off the price of the vehicle to allow for it.
My question to you guys is what would you recommend as a replacement? Would like DAB radio, CD, DVD, Bluetooth for phone calls, Nav and maybe even facility to hook up a reversing camera. Want to spend maximum of about £500 really (cheaper would be preferable). There's a lot of chinese ones on the market like pumpkin etc but have heard mixed reviews, some of the pioneer ones look pretty cool but again mixed reviews on some of the models.

Generally speaking the Chinese units are fully featured but not polished i.e. the interface may look ugly and there may be some bugs in the software but for the price they are usually worth it in my opinion. In the past I have used Xtrons which were always decent and they made some effort to make the menus look more pretty than the generics. I now have a Zenec unit which is pricey but occasionally you may find one used on eBay, these aren't generic Chinese units and have good software with updates.

I have a Pioneer 5600 double din and it is pretty slick but for half the price I should have gone for a high end chinese one. They have everything and if it breaks I could afford to just buy another one. Lots of features and if you get one that runs Android I'm sure you can get it rooted and put all sorts on there

also another thing to remember is that chinese units are notorious battery killers so beware of that unless researched for properly to find something that isnt gonna drain your battery, but on the flip side they really have some of the best options on them.

I have a pioneer avh x2700bt really chuffed with it it has reverse camera option I just bought a £3 camera of eBay.

plays everything and anything including dvd.
does Bluetooth and USB connection to phones and plays files from USB.
Sat nav from my iPhone via waze on the screen.

I have had it about 2 years now though so newer models are probably much better.

be wary of the chinese units the tuners are very weak, The vw uses a phantom amplified aerial which will cause poor reception even with the proper adaptor, so be prepared to fit a new aerial aswell.

I have a friend who has a 2008 T5 Transporter. He removed the original radio and put an aftermarket one in, I am sure I remember seeing the original lying around at his place. I think he had the basic spec one as I don't remember any kind of touch screen.

If you might want another original radio, let me know and I can confirm availability and price and list it in BST.

    Thanks to Over Carl

I've got an e46 bmw with a chinese android head unit. Its crashed about twice in the years ive had it and ive had to set up the navigation preferences like english accent but I prefer it to the factory nav in my range rover sport.

i got the pumpkin touchscreen head unit from amazon, works great, its not as slick as some of the expensive units, but for under £200 and I can play GTA on android in my Car
You know he grew up as a little shitspark from the old shitflint and then he turned into a shitbonfire and driven by the winds of his monumental ignorance he turned into a raging shitfirestorm. If I get to be married to Barb I'll have total control of Sunnyvale and then I can unleash the shitnami tidal wave that will engulf Ricky and extinguish his shitflames forever. And with any luck he'll drown in the undershit of that wave. Shitwaves.

Thanks a lot for the offer mate but thinking I may want to get a nice shiny new one with all the gismos on it.

does the Sat Nav stream ok from phone?
Been looking at this option as obviously save quite a few quid.

Yes mate its connected via cable from your iphone or android and its smooth with no lag at all.
I haven't really used it much apart from trips to london and reading but its been spot on.

You control waze through the screen of the Head unit, and unlike some units it still leaves the radio cd or ipod or what your listening to playing and just drops the volume when waze makes any announcements.

My missus liked the whole community updates on speed cameras and police cars etc as you drive lol.
My only disappointment is you cant mirror an iphone screen on this head unit.
