Mokka pots and a tin of red illy coffee for me. Gotta watch urself with coffee tho... all to easy to ramp it up and drink far too much to live a healthy life. I know an Italian chap, my old spanner in fact, did over 15 expressos a day.

Unless anyone is going Columbia, then I can put an order in for some special stuff...

Absolutely... I have a mild addiction and used to drink a lot more but now limit myself to 3 a day MAX... it is more often just 1 or 2 though and NEVER indulge after 2-3pm.

Not much of a coffee snob here. Dolche gusto machine at work, 48 americano pods for £10, two minutes, done, back to work.
No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride...

    Aeropress is AWESOME!.

At home I have my Gaggia Classic machine that I make proper espresso on (not one of these pod machines) and it is awesome too. Fantastic coffee, great milk steamer on it. Makes a fantastic latté.

In work, I have my Aeropress and my god that thing makes SMOOTH tasty coffee.. No shite in the bottom, not bitter. In fact, I'd run out of good coffee and was given some by a colleague. It was cheap nasty shite from home/bargain and the Aeropress actually made it taste much better. Put a good quality coffee in it and it's heaven.

Another vote for Aeropress here. It does make really good coffee, and as said above simple to clean by popping the whole lot straight into the bin, residue and filter in one pop.

On the advice of the DF massive, I got an aeropress about 18 months ago and its provided me with my coffee fix daily since. I use the paper filter and like malt, I ain't no peasant, 1 filter 1 coffee.

As someone else mentioned there are reusable metal filters, I picked up a knockoff one for a few quid but I find the paper filtered coffee is a bit smoother, although I have heard some purists talk about preferring the metal filters as they let certain oils through...or some shit.

I dunno about in blighty but you can get clones of the aeropress here for about 9quid with all the spoons and shit. I got the real deal for about 20 but after seeing my mates clone, apart from lacking the 1980's smoked coffee table colouring, it's exactly the same.

I went a bit nuts on french dark roasted coffee but that shit was so strong I was finding it was taking over my nervous system. I literally had to go cold turkey for a few weeks and now I just have a cup of italian roast in the morning to flush out my bowels and the occasional latte from a shop near my work in the afternoon.

There's an annual aeropress competition and you can find the winning brewing methods online, I went a bit zen and followed last years winner for a while, which was a japanese guy so everything was to exact weights and temperatures. Have to admit the coffee produced from that was off the scale, but it was too much fucking about for me.

Ordered an aeropress few weeks back and received one with bits missing. Anyway sent that back eventually and finally received my replacement yesterday.

Drinking my first one right now and boy its good. Love it.
Am I right in thinking you use a bit more ground coffee than with other methods/machine .. seems to take a bigger scoop than my about to be retired machine anyway. Not really fussed though.

So smooth and that is using a not so great coffee I took a punt on that was on offer a couple of weeks back. Tastes much better .

Thanks all for the previous info. Much appreciated.

Also for anyone else interested a big plus I can see is how portable it is. e.g. This will be travelling to hotels, camping, sailing etc. I ordered the one that came with a carry pouch for this purpose.

It takes a bit of experimentation to get it right, I tend to use a scoop and a half for a mug size and fill the tube to about the 3 mark.

Currently loving percol coffee that was £1.49 a bag on offer - for that it's a steal !

The amount of coffee is dependant on the strength of the roast and preference I imagine. I tend to use a strength 5 coffee but pretty much use one full scoop. However if I want to I can use a little less and just have it held in the cylinder for a little longer.

The trick is to pop your coffee in, pour on your water and immediately put the plunger in about 10mm. As soon as it gets the seal, a vacuum is created and NO liquid drips out through the filter (apart from the tiny bit prior to putting the plunger in). Then you can gently swill it round and leave for a minute or two. Alternatively, use the inverted method which I find to be a bit dodgy to be honest. Almost ended up with hot coffee all over the place.

    Love my Aeropress

I use Lavazza Black or Red.

Incidentally, try a latté. Use one full scoop, put water in up to the 1st mark or half way between the 1 and 2 mark. Leave for a minute or two. Heat up some milk in a mug and press the hot espresso coffee into the mug

Has anyone had any experience of the manual pump style highly portable coffee makers rather than aeropress ? Saw one today in a store which took nespresso type pods and wondered what it was like.

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

They are £55 on Amazon and the store I saw them in today had them for £50 with a 15% saving available off that so would have been £42.50 and there are also a number of clones on Amazon around the £30 mark.

I like the added convenience of using pods but only if the coffee is decent. Does anyone have one ?

    Make it simple.
Stove top peculator and coffee from Algerian Coffee stores (London, Old Compton Street), coffee of the month, high roast.
Buy getting coffee of the month that means you will try a variety of different coffees.
You can get it ground and store the sealed bags in the freezer, buying more is better for delivery costs.
I have a six cupper, I half the strength and that makes me my one coffee of the day nearing a pint.
I typically buy 10 half kilo bags at a time.
    Cheers.....Q

That really isn't making it simple. Quite the opposite. The pump device I'm on about is completely portable

I looked at this before thinking it might actually heat the water itself, as it didn't I figured it might be a bit shit. Was obvious really, i was clearly expecting too much for my money!

While I was looking last night I came across one that does actually heat too. Lemme see if I can find it.

** edit ** found it. Might have a punt for £15

are those little pod things ok?

I was looking at getting a low end electric burr grinder, but when browsing the net i saw a nice looking pod style coffee maker on the xiaomi website, had it been any other brand I'd have dismissed it as cheap tat, but generally the items on the xiaomi site are great. I was looking at 30 - 40 for a grinder anyway so I was, so it looks like a nice investment.

The nespresso pods are mostly great. The dolche gusto ones don't seem quite as good.

    Hi
With Nespresso or Tassimo machines you get a good fresh coffee each time, with a grinder or a beantocup machine you have to rely on your grinder blades being up to being right, usually difficult to get new ones when they go blunt and your grind is shit.
