If You’re Running Kodi 17.2 or Below, Updating to 17.3 is Seriously Urgent

    05/26/2017

We’re going to start off by saying: don’t shoot the messenger! The last thing we ever wanted to do is tell our users that they’ll have to upgrade twice in one week. This information is coming straight from the official Kodi developers, they’re highly recommending that everyone upgrade to the latest version. This update corrects major security flaws, and includes essential components were accidentally left out of the 17.2 release, which is why you’ll have to upgrade again even if you just upgraded to 17.2 this week. It also supports the newer type of HTTPS streams that don’t work in older versions of Kodi. Upgrading to the new Kodi 17.3 Krypton release should be fairly straightforward though, and won’t take longer than ten minutes if you follow these instructions carefully. Please note that this update is really not optional, it’s essential for reasons that we’ll explain in the next paragraph. Please don’t dismiss the need to upgrade, it’s for your own benefit, and free anyway!
Earlier this week, security researchers discovered a critical security flaw within Kodi and other popular media players that could allow an attacker to gain full access to your system. And as we explained before, even if you don’t care about someone hack1ng your $35 Android box, you should realize that that box is actually a mini computer, and the things that a hacker could make it do could be very damaging and illegal. Furthermore, previous versions of Kodi (prior to Krypton) do not support the newer type of HTTPS streams that are now used by the majority of sites. This means that if you don’t upgrade, you’re going to slowly lose HD sources until the day comes when nothing works at all, not to mention the risk that you’ll be hacked, now that a huge security flaw in the older versions of Kodi has been publicized by mainstream media. We’ll now walk you through every step of the Kodi 17.3 Krypton upgrade.

If you follow the instructions below carefully, upgrading should be super easy. Please note that these instructions describe the unofficial use of the Kodi media center.
    Before Proceeding

Android Users: Those of you who are running older devices or cheap Android boxes might run into some trouble. Kodi 17.3 Krypton requires Android 5.0 or higher to run. If your device doesn’t support Android 5.0, you’ll need to buy a new Android TV box in order to continue to enjoy Kodi.
Apple TV 2 Users: Even though the last two versions of Kodi didn’t support the Apple TV 2, the device still seemed to work alright. This will no longer be the case moving forward, without HTTPS or HD support it’ll be next to useless, it’s time to purchase a new Android TV box.

We’re very sorry to have to bring you this news, but upgrading Kodi to the latest version (released today) is fairly urgent if you wish to keep your network secure. Earlier today, a security flaw within Kodi (and other media players including VLC) was reported by researchers from Check Point Software Technologies. They demonstrated that an attacker could gain control of any Kodi device through the use of malicious code placed within subtitles. Hypothetically, if an infected subtitle file were to be downloaded by Kodi, it could give a hacker full control over your device. This is particularly concerning when it comes to automatically downloaded subtitles. It is very important that you upgrade Kodi as soon as possible, otherwise you could be leaving your entire computer, device, or even home network at risk.
Security flaws in software happens all the time, it’s normal. This security flaw also affected many other media players that are far more popular than Kodi. The important thing is that the issue was fixed quickly, and so far no damage has been reported. However, now that the security flaw has reached mainstream news, hackers will now likely be looking to exploit it far more aggressively. The official developers of Kodi have been working tirelessly to release an updated version of Kodi that would fix security flaw, as well as some other minor bugs. Team-Kodi “highly encourages” all users to install this latest version, as do we. If you’re still running Kodi 16.1 Jarvis or below, you might as well upgrade now, that way you’ll also gain access to all the streams that use newer HTTPS technology not supported in older versions of Kodi anyway.

If you follow the instructions below carefully, upgrading should be super easy. Please note that these instructions describe the unofficial use of the Kodi media center.

United Kingdom Users: It will be necessary to disable certain router security settings before continuing, we’d also highly recommend using a VPN Provider to circumvent site blocking.

Hundreds of millions of users could be at risk, as the flaw also affects VLC, Popcorn-Time and strem.io / Facebook/Kodi People are being urged to download a new update for the software

    The Independent Tech

Kodi has urged users to download a new update after security researchers discovered a vulnerability that could allow hackers to take over people’s devices.
The issue is an unusual one, which allows criminals to attack Kodi users through subtitles.
Millions of people are believed to be at risk, and they don’t need to have done anything wrong in order to be targeted.
Check Point, which discovered the issue, has described it as “one of the most widespread, easily accessed and zero-resistance” vulnerabilities reported in recent years.

“By conducting attacks through subtitles, hackers can take complete control over any device running them,” the company says. “From this point on, the attacker can do whatever he wants with the victim’s machine, whether it is a PC, a smart TV, or a mobile device.
“The potential damage the attacker can inflict is endless, ranging anywhere from stealing sensitive information, installing ransomware, mass Denial of Service attacks, and much more.”
Subtitles are perceived as “benign text files”, allowing this particular attack vector to go unnoticed by users and antivirus software alike.
Kodi was alerted to the issue before Check Point made its announcement, and has had time to create a fix.
“Our developers fixed this secuity [sic] gap and have added the fix to this v17.2 release,” Kodi has announced.
“As such we highly encourage all users to install this latest version! Any previous Kodi version will not get any security patch.” Users can download the latest version of Kodi here.
The open-source software is legal, but add-ons created by third parties can let people use it for access to illegal streams for sports events, TV shows and films.
Check Point says the same issue affects the VLC, Popcorn-Time and strem.io streaming platforms too. All three have issued fixes too, which can be accessed through Check Point’s blog.

Keep using Kodi to watch films and TV shows for free, says firm

“Our research reveals a new possible attack vector, using a completely overlooked technique in which the cyberattack is delivered when movie subtitles are loaded by the user’s media player,” the company explains.
“These subtitles repositories are, in practice, treated as a trusted source by the user or media player; our research also reveals that those repositories can be manipulated and be made to award the attacker’s malicious subtitles a high score, which results in those specific subtitles being served to the user.
“This method requires little or no deliberate action on the part of the user, making it all the more dangerous
