Default What was your musical journey ?

Now I was a late bloomer with music, hated it as a child (born 1976) and didn't really get into till later.
Probably due to the sounds of the 60s being the music of NO choice in the car.

When I started to get into it myself my "growing up" artists/bands would be:

    The Smashing Pumpkins
    Faith No More
    The Prodigy
    Radiohead
    Placebo
    Rage Against The Machine
    The Levellers

The pumpkins were my idols. I loved Billy Corgan until his ego destroyed the band .

What were your musical mentors as such ??

Edit: Also what has your musical taste progressed to ?

    Thanks to piggzy

Young parents in the 70s so mixture of allsorts back then. Then discovered Street Sounds Electro and then went through an indie thing in mid eighties, followed New Model Army on a few tours and PWEI, then rave arrived in Blackburn in mid 89 and did the warehouse parties until they were ruled out by the law. Since then I have listened to all sorts of shit. Electro gave me a good start and still have twenty tunes off them in my car.

Listened to random 7" singles I bought for 5p at the saturday car boot sale every weekend in the late 80's. As my memory vaguely recalls, that included Frankie goes to Hollywood, the dream warriors, and various other less credible crap. Once I secured a solid income of pocket money, the Now compilations were my source of musical influence, this peaked at Now 11, which included a selection of 1988 House music. Bomb the bass, Coldcut & Yazz, Jack and Chill and the Beatmasters were firmly steering me away from Kylie Minogue which lurked on the other side of the same cassette. I still bought the NOW compilations as an almost religious ritual, but when Now 13 included 'We call it acid' I could no longer bear the commercial shite that was on the rest of the cassettes.

I can't quite recall how this happened, but an Aunt was observant enough to buy me a cassette called 'House Hits 88'. which I played daily for about a year. After that it was a journey through electronic music: starting with acid house, techno, hardcore, jungle, drum n bass and endless other variations which have served me well to this very day.

    Aunt Tracy, I salute you.

Wow, had completely forgot about PWEI. I used to love them and from memory I think I saw them in Leeds back in the day. Will have to download a few.

    Good thread!

Growing up my Dad was into all sorts, so the car consisted of Simon and Garfunkle, Dire Straits, Meatloaf, Alice Cooper, The Beegees, The Furees amongst hundreds of others. I thank him for his eclectic tastes. I took a preference to the guitar based stuff, which startted my foray into Rock and Metal.

It was only due to me listening to the Deftones at school that a class mate (one of which I'd never really spoken to) noticed the CD, and asked me if I'd ever heard of Fat Wreck Chords. No, I said. So she lent me a sampler, and since then I've been riding the wave of West Coast American and Canadian Punk.

My favourite band has been consistent for the last 15 years now (Propagandhi - new material releasing this year which I'm excited about) but basically any melodic hardcore or skatepunk and I'm happy.

Notable exception goes to The Prodigy, who are absolute masters of any genre, and Liam Howlett is a God amongst men.

    Thanks to Ganty

I seem to have progressed onto

System Of A Down / Serj Tankian
    Deftones
    Linkin Park
    Static X
    Korn
    Five Finger Death Punch
even the odd tune from Fall Out Boy lol
Like a few from Slipknot, Disturbed

any good rock/metal for me but as Ganty said the Prodigy are bloody good. Liked them since Charley :-)

Rave, hardcore, jungle, drum&bass, techno, garage. I still listen to music I raved to over 20 years ago and still get spine tinglers.

Now contrary to what a lot of people think, I have a wide and varied music taste. I like most "good" music. And I mean "real" music. Anything remotely linked to manufactured pop, x factor, talent, rhinoanna, 50 pence, william and the like doesn't even come close.

I like all genres to some extent, but folk music and country and western are not my thing! I listen to classical, death metal, hiphop, gangster rap, retro all sorts at some point.

I can play several instruments, read music and make music so I like to think I know what I am talking about and also qualify to say when something is shit.

I think the only genre I really cant stand is R&B. Makes me angry when I hear it lol.

Rhianna, Beyoncé, 50 cent and all that bollox is really not for me. Absolutely hate it. All sounds the same imho.

Born at the end of '69. Dad was into his rock n roll in the late 50's and 60's. So we used to listen to his tapes of Bill hailey, eddy cochrane, chuck berry and elvis. Also he was a stones fan. So my tastes are guitar driven rock. My first album was iron maiden number of the beast and loved NWOBHM. Then in early 80's realised I loved punk too, but 5-10 years too late Ramones, new York dolls, pistols, gen x etc.
Oh and of course the Macc lads which I can't play at home with a politically correct wife and two young kids! (Also loved early 90's Manchester scene Stone Roses, charlatans etc.)
