BBC News Tim Farron quits as Lib Dem leader

Tim Farron has stepped down as leader of the Liberal Democrats after the general election.
In a statement, he said he was "torn between living as a faithful Christian and serving as a political leader".
He said he should have dealt "more wisely" with questions relating to his faith during the election campaign, including his views on gay sex.
He insisted he had taken the decision voluntarily and he retained the support of his party.

I don't disagree but for me the day they threw their hat in the ring with the Tories was it for me with the LibDems and I think a lot of people feel the same

It's the 'we will not raise tuition fees' promise that did it I think, at least for the current new-generation voters

With Clegg now gone, some of that shame has left with him. I did recently have a brief dalliance with the libdems and even joined their party, but with a resurgent Labour I'm not going to split my vote.

P.S I've only got another 5 years of voting left, then I hit the 15 year expat rule

I don't like saying this at all but.....

Considering the very sad news occurring in London it would be a good day to announce things that may get a LOT less press attention otherwise !!

Is there any chance that he is taking one for the team here?

By resigning he is highlighting the fact that religion and politics don't mix, and also highlighting the issue of how gay sex/marriage is viewed. Could he be trying to make the Tory pact with the DUP look untenable?

    Thanks to flumperino

Now that Vince Cable is on the team having won back his seat, I think he's yielding to the more capable politician.

I have always had a problem with Vince Cable ever since he said one of his greatest achievements (without looking up the exact details and quote) was to push the legislation to get the maximum sentence for software piracy increased from 2 years to 10 years, my issue isn't even the fact I think it is ridiculous people get much harsher punishment for breaching the rights mostly billion dollar multi national companies that pay little or no tax in the UK than other offences such as sexual offences, robbery and mugging or the fact he considers this one of his greatest achievements, it's that I have never heard anyone I know or for that matter been told of members of the public pushing for these harder sentences so this will have been a direct result of him being lobbied by these companies and considering it a far more noble cause than say new legislation or higher sentences for paedophi1es and smell a brown envelope.
