you will always get less than book price, corsa had very little service history, it was a 2006, i lost payed £800 sold for £500 but it had done 145k miles, the C1 is a 2010 full history paid £1800, book price was around 3-4K

I'd rather buy a CAT D damaged car and get it repaired myself by someone I knew and trusted.

I know someone that has a 993 Porsche 911 that he fixed up himself. It's a minter now.

Haha I know who you are talking about. Haven't seen him in ages but agree from what I remember it's a nice car.

A nice cheat, if you want to see if a car is write off just start and advert here,

enter the reg and some millage and click next step and if it is a write off you will see the category on the right hand side.

    Thanks to JonEp

Careful with insurance companies, i had a cat D 405 (years ago!) loved the car, insurance companies can sometimes flat out refuse to insure it - especially if you were as young as i was!

    Cat D cars

As with Cat C vehicles, Cat D cars can be fixed - but the repairs will cost less than its market value. However, the insurance company's decision to repair the vehicle is dependent on more than the cost of the repairs.
A Category D write-off can often be caused by moderate damage. The insurance company also has to take into account the cost of a courtesy car and inspection fees once the repairs have been completed. So it might decide that it doesn't make financial sense to repair the Cat D car.
If that's the case, the insurer can decide to sell the car to an independent garage, which then repairs the car for less money and is able to sell it on to the public.

ok guys still looking for a car. seen a cat c car and checked the reg on mot history.

    12 july 2017 : mot pass

    6 july 2017: mot fail.

    Reason(s) for failure

Offside Front Track rod end ball joint has excessive play (2.2.B.1f)
Nearside Front Body or chassis is damaged, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings chassis leg (6.1.B.2)
    Emissions not tested (7.3.A.1)
Exhaust system not adequately supported (7.1.1)
Supplementary Restraint System warning lamp indicates a fault (5.4.2)
    Passengers airbag obviously defective (5.4.1)

just a bit curious it went in for mot it failed 6 days later it passed.

1 thing thats got me kind of worried on Advisory notice when it failed was

"Nearside Front Body or chassis is damaged, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings chassis leg (6.1.B.2)"

does that mean the chassis is bent? should i be worried? as it passed 2nd time.

I would walk away from that one. Sounds to me like they could have gotten a dodgy MOT on it - unless it was something like the body or wing and they got it replaced. It's a crap advisory as front body is recoverable from but I would think chassis would be a game-stopper.
