    Default Sky & Torrent downloads.

Hi guys, I've downloaded a couple of films for the kid recently and had emails from sky about downloading torrents.

I've got a nap server running and wondered if I could install a free VPN. Like Softether Openvpn, L2tp, Sstp Vpn onto the server and download direct to there and avoid any headache?

    Cheers,

    Devs.

Are you using a public tracker?

Sky will still know even if it's private. Most isps blocked the public torrent search sites.

Yes. All your traffic is routed via the VPN and is encrypted so although the ISP can see your traffic they no longer know what the traffic is.
You do lose a chunk of your download/upload speed doing this though depending on how powerful the hardware is you are using.

Last Q, I usually download via the 'bit torrent app' on a mac. Now that I've signed up to windscribe and installed there chrome add on. Shall I just crack on?

How? Have they just blocked all P2P traffic? There are many legitimate reasons to use P2P / torrents, so I'm interested to know how.

Deffo works fine. My ISP also blocks ALL these sites (BT), every single Pirate Bay proxy you can imagine, all the good Torrents search engines blocked and torrents sometimes seem throttled.
Via VPN all work fine. If its encrypted Sky can't know unless you are using a shit VPN.

They don't block you using torrents. They block public website torrent search engines like piratebay.

From their end they can see the headers (files) from a torrent file so they know what it is ur downloading. They also know ips of known public trackers so in essence they know where to look and what for. That's not a very tech description but it's simple for isps to see what u are doing. Thus why they are being pushed to give logs to the pollips, and other enforcement agencies.

Not had any issues, even allowed me to use skygo in Russia last week on my iPhone.

There was another freebie about a while ago, okay freedom. There's often offers, loopholes and promotions for many.
If u actually need to use one a lot and are willing to pay then there's a few recommendations on the forum somewhere.

If you use a proper VPN they should not be able to see IP's beyond the VPN public IP or torrent headers. They should just see encrypted traffic between you and VPN and nothing more. Some VPN's are not really VPN's and use tunnelling and proxies and other fancy network magic . Then you have the other issue. Does the VPN that "keeps no logs" really keep no logs.

Best you can hope for is to choose a VPN based in a country that has no laws/treaties on disclosing internet data. Switzerland etc. You don't even have to route you traffic through that country, the VPN just has to be based there lol

Nothing is 100% secure. They will get u if they want to.

You can can make it harder for isps to notice that's about it.

Does anyone remember a program called Peerblock, and Peerguardian?

Does that help with stuff like this?

Absolutely, but unless someone has managed to get their hands on a quantum computer a decade or two early it will take them about 15 year s to crack the encryption with current hardware.
It is not that the encryption used is uncrackable it is that no current hardware exists anywhere in the world that could do it in under a decade.

The issues with this is not that ISP's can see or decipher/crack. They cannot.
It is can the VPN be trusted? If it is even a VPN in the first place and do they keep logs to hand over to the authorities ??

Nothing is 100% because you don't know the VPN can be trusted.
However you could make your own VPN, but what exactly are you up to :-)

Way to make a guy paranoid!

What you think to streaming stuff via plex? Reckon they can see that? Are they more arsed about p2p than private sharing?

What vpn company do you trust then as just about to get a premium vpn.

    Check out http://www.vpnlist.net/

Everyone seems to say Private Internet Access. Paranoid too so cant really recommend one as I am constantly changing myself :-)

Have used PIA, BolehVPN both seemed fine. Currently looking for a new one myself as PIA seem to be having some speed issues atm.

    Edit:
After a bit more research I would ignore that above link. Very old out of date data a lot of it.

This site seems a lot better.
