    Default Advertising screen.

Ok folks i've volunteered and now on the committee at my local scout group where my kids go.
I would like to put up a screen with up coming events, so that parents dropping off picking up kids can view it.

What pc system would be ok ? Would something like a raspberry pi work with a monitor ?
What software would be best to use, just something that changes pages , might ask a few local business if the would like to advertise on the screen as way of funding it.
So it would have to change screen every 10 seconds or so.
It would need updating weekly could that be done remotely via a Wi-Fi dongle ?

    Cheers + beers

    Ted

Hardware wise, you could use a small tv with a USB stick. Some of our offices use tv's in reception for displaying info like this.

no pc needed, create video or power point, use a tv with usb port and use a flash drive.

Like its been said you dont really need to use a pc for this. I know of a hotel that uses a tv with usb stick that scrolls through photos, if you see it you'd never know it was just changing photos from a usb.

Exactly that. We do this at my work.

Newer TV's will show the .ppt. Older ones we export as a video and play it on repeat.

The video/powerpoint would be the simplest option but updating weekly could become a pain in the arse.

Might be worth having a look at Screenly OSE which runs on the Pi.

Use a Pi3 with Ubuntu, install Apache and use a full screen web browser.

With it being around kids are you not worried that a browser related setup could be compromised and show anything?
personaly I would go with the tv and usb stick.
Have 2 sticks and swap them over every now and then.

Nope - I wouldn't have a default gateway. That way I could connect via sftp to upload new data and if there was no network it would still display what I wanted. With no default gateway it isn't getting anything from the interwebs.

Have a look at Samusng's digital signage it's very well done, basically a screen with all the tools needed to run presentations from videos to ppt to youtube, has options to rotate and you can manage it from a smart phone. Prices aren't horrific either
