    Default Maplins going under

Visited the place many times, & every time refused to price match any other local store & refused to even acknowledge on line prices. Last time i was in there (summer last year) i told the manger they would end the way of "Comet" if they didn't rethink there pricing policies.
Maplin had some great products over the years & were the only place available for the likes of build your own Pic programmers, but now with the likes of Ebay, u can pick one premade for half the price of a Maplin build your own
    .

One of the UK’s biggest electronics retailers is racing to find a buyer in an effort to save the business from administration.
A Maplin spokesman said: “We are in advanced talks with a number of parties and expect to be in a position to announce a solvent sale of the business within days.
“Once secured, this will stabilise the business to the benefit of all stakeholders and provide Maplin with the financial firepower to deliver its 2020 multichannel strategy focused on smart tech.”
Maplin is said to be optimistic that the sale will be solvent rather than a pre-pack, which would be good news for the 2,500 people it employs.
However a pre-pack sale – which allows the healthy part of a business that has gone into administration to be sold on quickly – will be considered if a deal for a solvent sale cannot be reached.

It's one of those places where you can get a lot of hard to get 'on the day' bits and pay over the going rate for, but other than that I tend to avoid there as it is over priced and as you say the same kit is available online for a fraction of the price. Now that Amazon can deliver me most bits next day including Sundays I haven't been to Maplin for about a year.

I always thought they were rip off merchants, when I was in headless chicken mode looking for a PSU they wanted £30 more than finally what I got 2 miles up the road from a pc outlet

Bye Bye they wont be missed by me.

If I don't need it now I buy from China. If I want it now I get it from Maplins and pay quadruple what the China prices are.

What always pissed me off was if I ever took anything back, they always asked for my address. Even told me it was retail law. I never gave it, told them they never needed it when they were taking my money off me, always got my refund. Fuck off Maplin.

I only used em a fair bit because where I live there are NO alternatives and if you need something on the day it did the job.
As others have said though, they are too pricey.

I've often thought I can get stuff (often much) cheaper elsewhere.

However normally with the other sources I can't get the item same day.

Also often I've popped in for some random component I need to finish something, and while I'm there I'll end up buying some more soldering supplies or other odds and sods.

They also seem to have a surprising presence around central London, and I don't think they price gouge in those stores, so as much as I would prefer if they were cheaper, I can understand they will never be able to compete on price against an ebay seller who could be trading out of their shed without paying any tax.

I'll be sad to see it go.

On the up side happy to rake over the remains after the yellow and black 50% 40% 30% off window poster tickets that seen generic when these companies fold.

Not sure I agree with some of the comments above about the staff. In recent times the stores I've visited I've always found the kids working there had a good working knowledge of the kit they were selling. More than I can say for PCworld.

I just got fed up of the hard push asking if you need some help the moment you walked through the door.

Same as you guys regarding the prices, always loved a store like Tandy and Maplins but found it difficult to pay over the odds unless it was something cheap and I couldn't be bothered to order online.

Not used one for a couple of years myself so not really going to miss it.

    UPDATE:

Just did a quick search and found Maplins clearance but prices still high.

Damn I didn't see that bargain, I guess they'll be out of stock with savings like that to be made.

Don't be buying them all and flogging them on ebay

I often visit the one near my mum's in Staple's Corner, NW London. The staff are usually knowledgeable geeky types and so I'm happy to pay for the advice and quality. Its obviously more for smaller stuff, components, cables etc..
