Default Ideas for what car next

My car is a mk4 astra sxi 16.16v 17 years old, and think it might be time to change.I'm thinking of another astra, model design or another sxi aprrox 09 10 plate for around 2k-3k.Other cars ive considered are vw Golf vw jetta Audi a3 or a4 volvo s40, car needs to be a medium sized family car. What would be your choice given the same position.
    thanks

Had loads of cars over the years and over time have come to conclusion the Vauxhall's are the biggest piece of shit on the roads.
Just my experience but I will never ever touch one again.
Had Astra's, a Cavalier back in the day and a Zafira.

Would either go VW or Audi from your mentioned list. Get the Volvo if you are past retirement age :-)

    Just my 2p.

    3 Thanks given to piggzy

thanks for the reply, yes i think its a pass on the volvo idea.As for astra its just because ive had mine for ages now.Only problem with audi is it would need to be diesel as petrol's are ever big engines or very high mileage, and that looks like its going to be hit with tax hikes. VW golfs and jetta prices seem very high

We have a cmax and it’s a really nice car.

im with piggzy on the Vauxhall’s I have also owned a few and everyone has been a bag of shit!
we are looking at a Suzuki grand vitara for our next motor.

the only issue I can see is the death of diesel and larger petrol engines in them.

For the size you are looking for consider a Mazda. I have a Mazda 3 Sport (having gone from a Mondeo) and love the thing. Like a Golf, but with more tech as standard and normally a much better price. Nippy, too.

I have had the fast hatchbacks but thinking of a bit of style, the wife's new Fiesta is paid off end of the year so I'm thinking of getting Jaguar XF/XJ not sure yet it all depends on price.
if i had to go with a small fast car i think it would be the new Fiesta ST

I hired a Kia Rio in Sicily last year and was surprised how much I liked it, it’s worth taking one for spin to see.

I wouldn't write the Volvo off as an "Old Mons Car", I've had numerous models from S40, V40, S60, V60, S80, etc. I recently sold a 2016 D3 V40 R-Design, great performance for a diesel and the trim and dash layout is second to none (the dials are basically an HD display, as all computerised).

One thing to watch out for on the newer generation of Volvo is for issues on the push button Start / Stop immobiliser system. They do fail and rectifying them can be very expensive.

If you want blistering performance look to any of the D5 models.

    * Edit: Sorry, only just noticed the budget criteria. I would still consider an older model though.

Best Hatchback I ever had was the Civic or if you want something a little bigger the Accord. The Accord Type-R was the best car I ever had.
imho it beats the Audi, maybe not on image but value for money hands down.

you would get a pretty decent ford focus for that price probably an 09/10 plate and they are pretty solid cars

    Thanks to pratman

I'd look at a BMW 3 series with low mileage, if its got good service history etc they are v good reliable motors.
    3k you could get around a 07 08 plate

    Thanks to consoles

Out of cars in that price bracket, one thing you can think about is amount of depreciation, A golf will loose far less than an astra for example, plus it will loose at lot slower rate. So if you can stretch to a Golf you will hold your money in it better.
