    Default Dolby Digital on Gamecube?

Everyone knows that Gamecube only supports ProLogic II, and no digital surround...

So why does my copy of Super Monkeyball 2 (A Gamecube only title) have 'DOLBY DIGITAL' written on it, as well as the 5.1 logo?

I checked all my other 'cube games and none of them have it...
    Strange, huh?

Gamecube can support Dolby Digital 5.1, but it requires additional effort. Its not built in like in the Xbox.

I submitted this question to Dolby Customer Support a few days ago, and they just got back to me today:

    Hello,

We strongly suspect that your game was mislabeled, as indeed the Gamecube does not support Dolby Digital. Thank you for letting us know; we will purchase other copies of the game if we find any labeled like yours, and inform the producer of the packaging error.

    Best regards,

    Dolby Customer Support

to my knowledge the Gc doesn't suport dd, but that doesn't mean the games can't ether, I think all you'd really need is a DD 5.1 reciever and you'd be off

No, I'm afraid a DD 5.1 receiver will do you no good. According to an article I read, the Gamecube sound processor is capable of just about anything - even DTS if you don't mind the hit in processing speed. But since there is no digital-out, the only audio cables you can connect are analog. Definitely my biggest beef with the 'cube.

I think Sega just fucked up when printing the discs.

There is a digital out, but the adapter needed to output a digital audio signal was never released by Nintendo. The only cable released to make use of the A/V output on the Gamecube was the component video cable. A built in converter within the cable itself converts the digital video signal to an analog component signal. A good majority of games released will output a 480p signal if the cable is detected. Holding the B button at a game's boot up screen will prompt the option for progressive scan.

In 2003, the Dts website mentions that the Gamecube is capable of supporting Dts sound and that NBA Street vol 2 would support it. I'm not sure if EA followed through with it since Nintendo never released the adapter needed.

As for Super Monkey Ball 2, I'm pretty confident that if someone was to extract the signal audio from the digital A.V. port through some hacked connection and convert it to output via optic or coaxial that we'd find it does in fact output a 5.1 DD. Sega was big on adding extras like 16x9 and secret content in their Gamecube games (F Zero GX disc contains F Zero AX)

Yo do realise you've dug up a 13 year old thread? This must be a new record.
