Mafia freezes up!

Damn I got a real problem with mafia, in short words it freezes up after few minutes of playing(tutorial), and if i try playing in single player mode it freezes up right away, sometimes even during cut scenes. I tried playing this game both on WIN 98 and XP...it still happens...the same thing. My specs are P4 1.7 with 512MB of RAM, ASUS mobo, and a Radeon 8500(using the latest CATALYST drivers). Has anyone experienced the same problem or knows what causing it, please help.

I too, liked Mafia most that way

Anyway, P4 1.7 @ howmany ?
Ran it on Rad8500 too, no probs, previous drivers, all set to normal... but locking up after some minutes smells like an overclocking issue OR soundblister imcompatibility.
