Default Overburning: 79 or 80 minutes?

I'm looking at picking up a Plextor 48/24/48A. The spec sheet says it can handle discs with a diameter of 12cm, which they say translates to 79 minutes. Is this pretty much standard, or are there drives that can handle 80 minute images? Are there any images that run longer than 79 minutes?

I don't think the spec sheet was referring to 79 minute cdrs. I think it was saying that the drive is capable of writing to the first 79 minutes of the disc.

Ive seen Plextor 48x for about $100, but you really don't need it. I bought a 40x about 3 months ago and my cd's dont even support over 16x. So, it's kind of a waste of money to get a faster one. But hey, if you want it done a minute earlier and have the money, go for it.

About the 99min CD's, I have heard of them but never actually seen them. Maybe they are in Europe or somethin I dunno. Some drives such as the Plextor used with Nero, which I use, can overburn up to 83min but you run the risk of damaging the media and the drive.

yeah 90/99min cds are quite common now. www.121cdr.co.uk sell em, just find a compatabililty list and check yer drives on it, then set the overburn in nero to 99mins

personally.. i dont 100% see the point, they're not very good discs from what i've read. all releases have to comply with <80mins, and thats the main thing i burn.. so unless im doing mp3 comps i wouldn't really care

Getting back to my question for just a second, will a burner that says it can handle the first 79 minutes do the job? Can it really only handle 79 minutes, or do they all say that to stop people from trying to burn 80+ minutes? Are there any drives that say they can handle 80 minutes?

All new burners can support 80+ min burns. Unless its a total pos burner, but Plextor makes a good product so it should be able to.

That is so stupid why would companies market a 48x burner as new cutting edge technology if the burner only attains 48x speed at the end of burning.... I say screw these big corporations.. for fooling the non computer savy public. I bought my 40 verbatim burner jus to find out lil bro's 32x no name burner is faster.... that sucks
