This is a cut and paste from a recent thread I replied to:
I myself have a PS2 (Ver. 1) using Neo 2.2 with a Gameshark 1.1. I have had great success using the following method - 1. Always start with the PS2 powered off and the GS/AR disc in the PS2 ( this is important part). 2. Turn on the PS2 using the front panel ON/Reset switch. 3. Now just do the standard swap - Start Game / without codes. 4. Pay attention when you place your backup in the drive and press the eject button to close the tray (listen very closely to the sound of the drive) if you hear some noises a pause and then here a CLUNK sound the game will not boot. If you hear some noises a pause and then hear the drive spinning again the game will boot. If you get the CLUNK sound try opening and closing the tray again and listen. If you consistently get the CLUNK sound start over with GS/AR disc in the PS2 and power OFF (red light). The key to this working (at least for me) is starting with the GS/AR drive in the PS2 and the power off. I hope this helped - please let me know your experiences when you try this or if you need me to elaborate more. Good luck.

    hehe,

I have Neo 2 and this exactly what I do, people used to think I was mad when I would be on my knees listening to the sound of the bloody drive. but its definatly the way to know for sure whether or not it gonna work.

I have this exact same problem, but its on a v1 PS2 that no longer plays DVD's at all fitted with a neo 2.2. Needless to say, the laser is not in the best shape. I do use high quality CD-R's though.

I can load games EVERY TIME 100% by using the EA boot method. I don't know why but it works every time. Do a search on the forum on how to do the EA boot method.
