Please Help!!! With 4000 N Box. Err 12 Err 20

    Hello,

I've got a problem as what a lot of people have. Ive searched this forum and found no real answer to my problem.

My 4000 N box (NTL) has been nuked by me pulling the red jumper out and putting it back in. Im getting two error read outs. Err 12 and Err 20 on the front panel and all services seem to be failing with no picture to view at all. Only the NTL info bar.

My 4000 N box has no serial rs232 port on the back. Just a USB.
Ive heard people say that a serial to usb cable wont work. It's impossible for me to use LibDebug to get my network ID running okay again. At the moment it is 09999.

Ive heard its possible to make a cable and solder it to the board, but thats a little bit too confusing for me as it seems a lot harder than i thought it was.

Can anyone help me in anyway as to tell me how to get this box working. Im sure a lot of people are in a similar situation as from the posts I've read.

Why do I not have an RS232 port on this model box? Does anyone actually know? because the newerw boxes still have them. (4001 and 4001N)

    Many thannks

don't know why the 4000 was built without a 232 port, strange isn't it. However by pulling the jumper you have reset the box as you have confirmed by the 0999 nid. The two error codes the box is reporting on boot is no network found which of course it won't ever do with 0999. You now have to reset the page one settings within the eng. menu to the freq. etc for your area. The only was to alter the nid is with libdebbug and a home made 232 interface.

However it does work when you have done it, so its not all crap.

Can anyone please help me as to how I make the RS232 interface. What do I need and how do I implement it please.

    What is the simplest way?

    Please use simple terminology.

    Thanks.

    Have i got this right?

Do I need to get a rs232 chip from maplins or similar store and wire it up.

I found this chip on their site for 1.99.

    Is this the right chip?

Yea any 16pin dil max232 should do it, mine says adm232aan on it and it worked fine. 4x10v 10uf caps ensure the programming line levels are held at a sufficent level.

Sorry to trouble you again mate.

I dont understand the pin outs on the attachment (bodge).

    What do I connect up.

Do I connect all nine pins on the rs232 cable to the rs232 chips. If so which pins to which legs on the chip.

It explains on the attachment but its not to clear to me. It seems that theres onay a few connections according to the attahment you posted.

Once Ive attached or soldered the points on the chip do i rest the rs232 chip on that place in the box or do i have to solder the rs232 chip and then solder the point on to the chip. Please help. Im totally confused.

    Much appreciated mate.

    Thanks again.

    Still dont get it.

Can someone explain what I need to connect to what? In other words, do I have to solder the chip on to the board afterwards? Or do i rest it on there, or what?

Is this right? The Serial cable I use is a normal 9 pin to 9 pin one. One end goes into the comms port of the computer and the other end gets cut up to reveal the 9 wires. These 9 wires get attached to the RS232 chip that I get from Maplins at the specified places specified by Tango in his attachment in previous post (Still a little confused about that).

After that is done, how do I connect the interface to the box so i can use libdebug?

Thanks for the file Tango. Its appreciated.
If you can please explain in a little more detail. Thanks.

right if u get the parts i mentioned in the other thread from maplins, and look at the interface pic from above.

u will see u wire the chip to the db9 socket u just got from maplins, then u wire the caps to the chip and then the chip to ur 4000 box.

i have coloured the places were to wire from the chip to the box blue, yellow, red and black u then use a 9 pin - 9 pin serial cable ( 1 end to pc com port other end to the db9 wired to chip).

u then run (digdebug, bmsdebug, libdebug) all the same program

load the correct config file for the ur box with ur net id edited into it and set ur network.

take the chips back off the box and connect it to cable feed.
do ur card mods and talkback (if not allready done).
    watch tv.

Stupid question maybe, but why can I not see any of the diagrams, most probably associated with my post count but thought I'd ask anyway.
