This is not a review site but it might save you some money.
Not many people know thank HP (Compaq) each month have offers that they call More 4 Less. If you visit www.hp.com and choose Uk then search for more for less you will see which have been reduced. Once you know that you can search around for the best prices etc.
Compaq are my fav regarding laptops but thats just an opinion.
try http://www.compaq.co.uk/more4less/index.html
they have a N1020V with P4-D 2.4Ghz, 15"TFT XGA, 40GB, 256MB, DVD,-CD/RW LAN/Modem, XP Pro for about £1085, i bet you could get that for less than a grand.
+vat that is.
Cheers
I would also have a regular look at the Dell outlet site http://www.euro.dell.com/countries/u...fo/default.htm
Laptops can be found at http://www.euro.dell.com/countries/u..._notebooks.htm
Factory re-fit laptops for silly money.
example, 2-3-03
£834.73 P4-1800 15 Inspiron 8200 40 GB (I) - 5400 RPM 384Mb 32MB GeForce
Last year I paid 1850 for a similar system but it had 512Mb, 64Mb GFx and 60Gb drive.
As for the new Dells', look at http://commerce.euro.dell.com/dellst...ad=8544&mc=111
8200 with 2.0Ghz M P4, 1199 plus VAT

for a Sony Vaio FX905P Athlon 1600+ XP, 256MB, 30GB, DVD/CDRW, 56K, LAN, 15" TFT, XP Pro for £1091.58 inc Vat
check out on www.cnet.com or on www.zdnet.com for reviews and prices
Sorry folks about the PSP history, I sold one at the price I bought to a mate and 2nd one I got some cash extra.
I paid 818 ex vat for a dell inspiron 8200, P4-M 1.8 ghz, 512 meg ddr 266 ram, 64meg ati radeon 9000, 24xCDRW/8xDVD, 30 gig HD, 15" uxga+ screen (native res 1600x1200). Nice piece of kit, for the money you want to spend then you can get one brand new top of the range easily from dell, but I'd suggest picking one up from the factory outlet site, you save a few hundred.
Alternatives that may be slightly better in some ways are the top of the range vaio's 16" screens, although not as clear as the uxga ones on the dells.

If you wanna spend a little more (£2,400 inc) than I can highly recommend the Toshiba Satellite 5200-801.
It is incredibly feature packed and boasts the following spec:
P4 2.0GHz Mobile (512k cache, 400MHz FSB)
512MB DDR-RAM (266)
64MB GeForce 4 460
60GB HDD
15" UXGA Screen (1600x1200 res)
Harmon Kardon speakers inc SUB (nothing else out there can even come close for sound quality)
CD/DVD/CD-RW/DVD-RW drive (works perfectly with CloneCD)
3HR Battery
Multi Function LCD Touchpad
3x USB 2.0 ports
1x 1394 FireWire port
Bluetooth
Wireless LAN
Toshiba Smartcard reader
5.1 Sound (when using digital out only)
etc, etc, etc (just too much to list).
I also looked at a Sony Vaio (16" TFT), but the Toshiba pissed all over it at the end of the day (Toshiba are the laptop kings at the end of the day, everybody else is just a beginner IMO).
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it
I looked around and found the best one to be the Dell Inspire 8200 I payed £1700 for mine which is
P4 2.4 Mobility Chip
512Meg
60GB
Radeon 9000 65Meg
15" UXGA 1600x1200
DVD Combo
I also came across these people which looked well nice and cheap, but I've never heard of them

BUT ITS GOT A INTERNAL DVD WRITER!
So has the Toshiba Satellite 5200-801 and it has a sound system that NOBODY else can even come close to matching (BTW, Tosh have been fitting DVD-RW drives since last year and they copy ANYTHING if you use the right software).Originally posted by MadMunky

Also, that system you found actually uses a desktop chip. Obviously you have the possible ability of fitting a faster CPU, but you won't have any of the power saving features.
I have heard of Gericom but lets face it, there is only one daddy when it comes to laptops.

call me stupid but who is the daddy of laptops then?

It's Toshiba mate, they are the world's No 1 laptop manufacturer (and have been for longer than most people care to remember).

The Satellite 5200-801 should be coming down in price now, I bought mine as soon as it was released (last October) and so consequently paid the full price (£2,499 inc).
I promise you, the sound system on it will fcukin amaze you (no other laptop comes even remotely close for sound quality).
