    Here are some ideas that immediately spring to mind;

    - The files are actually bad.
    - Bad crack/patch/keygen/whatever for WinRAR.

    Are there any .PAR/.p00/.p01 etc files available for the files you downloaded from the newsgroup? You can use something like SmartPAR with these files to recreate any missing or corrupt RAR files.

    PS I know someone who was transferring files across a LAN and the files were found to be corrupt once they had reached their destination - the cause of the problem transpired to be a dodgy Ethernet card so I guess you might be experiencing a similar problem if you have an Ethernet-based Internet connection. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable such as Aido or Pegasus Team will be able to confirm or deny that this *might* be the problem

    Hehe, knowledgable - the tenner's in the post mate You've about covered everything there mate..

    Anyway, is it just when downloading from a news server that you get these problems or do you get corrupt files via the web / ftp etc?

    Any chance you can say which news service you're using? All groups or just particular groups? I know the PC groups can be very dodgy at times and a lot of smaller files are corrupt.. Also what newsreader are you using (Outlook Express doesn't qualify )

    Some are generally shite and other's are very good. I use Clara & Easynews and Clara have the occasional corrupt file and whenever this happens you will usually find enough PAR files to fix the problem or the files on Easynews are clean - if not then it's a source problem....

    Usenet is still a bit archaic in that all data transferred is 7 bit - yEnc came along using an 8 bit transfer mechanism which works on most servers nowadays but sometimes it will be propagated thru a server which doesn't handle 8bit data and ****s it up...

    You'll also find that some people post using a dodgy version of PowerPost which also ****s things up.. Usually the poster will get told when they make a mistake.. Other software with early yEnc implementations also **** that up too...

    Just pm me the files you're having trouble with and I'll check them at this end if you like...
