Default How can I OWN my domain name.

    Hi

I was wondering about registering a domain name. These names are registered to a company, who effectivly own your name, and after 1 or 2 years you have to "buy" it back. So if you make a success of that name, this company can gain from it and charge you more for it the next time you want to register.

I was wondering who these companies register there domain names with. So if I go to 123reg and register what do they do, to make it theirs, and why cant we do that to make them ours.

Am I making sense ? Hope so.

    It doesn't quite work in the way you suggested. Let's take a simplified example;

Nominet are the registrar for .co.uk domain names. This means that every domain registrar (like 123reg, for example) goes to Nominet to register a .co.uk domain name.

When you pay 123reg to register a .co.uk domain name, they pay Nominet to register the domain for you but the domain is registered in your name.

If, after 1 or 2 years (or however long you registered the domain name for), you want to retain the use of your domain name then you simply pay the agent who you registered the domain with originally (i.e. 123reg) and they will extend the registration of your domain name.

Nobody truly 'owns' a domain name - they are just registered for a period of time and if the owner forgets to renew the registration then it becomes available again.

    Thanks for the help.

So does anyone think its worth registereing directly with Nominet.

Or is this more of a waste of time ?

The application form to register your name directly is simple enough. https://www.nic.uk/dom-app.html

However they charge £80 if your not a Nominet member

    Thanks for the help.

    From http://www.nominet.org.uk/Registerin...istrationFees/

    ---
Nominet charges £80 plus VAT per direct domain name registration, which must be paid in full in advance.

Nominet offers its members a discount on registration fees. Registration agents (ISPs), including Nominet members, usually combine the domain name registration fee with charges for other services that they provide to end users. Prices therefore vary widely in the commercial marketplace and you should shop around in order to find a deal that suits your needs.
    ---

Basically, it's cheaper and easier to go to someone like 123reg.

urm, dont even consider registering direct with nominet.

Just use a company who are a nominet member. It'd have to be a harsh company to whack up your renewal just because your site is popular, they may shag you for hosting/bw but that's a totally different matter (not that we do). pm if you're still stuck.

Best bet is to register a domain with 123-reg.

I use oneandone and have nothing but excellent things to say about them. I have 4 or 5 domains registered with them and at £1.99 for 2 years I think this is excellent value - they are quick too.

You got a root server off them? cool. Been thinking about getting a proper server off them for a couple of months but can't really justify it. I'll have to make do with 2 meg DSL for now methinks.

Yeah. I'm on 210gig at the moment and am waiting for my 2 meg to be activated. I'm glad my motherboard has 4 RAID interfaces as I can see this at least doubling in capacity over the next couple of months!
