Could anyone give me some advice?
I brought a domain name from www.fasthosts.co.uk and I have now found that I cant send mail using them?
I can I get it so that I can send/receive emails using my domain name (E.g. myname@mydomain.co.uk)
Thanks

To send it's usually easy, you just enter the from field as whatever you want it to be (or at least that's always worked for me)..
To receive you'd need to add an MX record to the DNS config for the domain pointing to your SMTP server IP address...
If you don't have a permanent connection some companies, for example Freeparking, allow you to redirect mail to certain addresses, you usually get 10 or 20 redirects or a catchall filter that redirects all mail to the domain to another email address, ie your ISP's..

ummmm your user name is very misleading
how can I add a MX record pointing to your SMTP server IP address?
Thanks m8
IF you look after your DNS server config just add a new MX record..Originally posted by computerman

If Fasthosts do it all then I couldn't tell you - ask them if they support user definable MX records.....
If you only need the one user then forward it all to your ISP's address...
..: Update :..
I've just read your mail again and you don't know how to send mail from your domain - you use your existing ISP's SMTP mail relay & in your email software just change the From: header..
The stuff I've put above is only for incoming mail.
The thing is tho, Im the email addresses are for an office.
Each user wants to send using their own domain (mike.smith@mydomain.ltd.uk)
And, Each user wants to receive mail using their own domain (mike.smith@mydomain.ltd.uk)
Fasthosts tells me just to use my ISPs SMTP to send mail?
Are you using a mail client like MS Exchange or do you just use the POP3 protocol?
If you are using POP3 then you would need firstly give everyone an alias email address from your ISP most decent ISP's give you a few alias's and allow you to buy more. Then you can set up the addresses that you want for everyone to be directed to the alias address.
i.e you ISP email address might be computerman@pipex.co.uk
at Fasthosts see if they have a facility for forwarding email you could then set up a number of email address could be computerman@yourdomain.com then you set all mail sent to this address to be forwared to your ISP email address.
You would have to do this for each individual that requires an email address.
If you are using MS exchange or another SMTP client then someone else would have to help cause I don't know enough about it to offer advice.
Hope this makes sense, I know what I mean but it is quite difficult to explain.
Yep, like I say, just send messages through the standard ISP SMTP mail server, all you need to do is go round the machines and change the From: address in the software to whatever you want it to be..Originally posted by computerman

It's going to be easier for you mate if you just upgrade to the Business account at Fasthosts - that gives you unlimited POP3 boxes so that will give you what you want at the receiving end.
There are programs out there that will allow all mail forwarded to one address to be filtered into different POP3 boxes dependant on certain message headers, such as MDaemon, but in all fairness mate it's a lot quicker and easier for you to just buy the service in..
When a user gets an email will it show my email my address (E.g. computerman@mydomain.ltd.uk)?
How about if I were to get a Matrix Windows server from www.fasthosts.co.uk?
Would this give me what im looking for?
To show the email address you want in Outlook go to TOOLS then select ACCOUNTS choose the account you want to amend then select PROPERTIES.
Where it says email address type in what you want it to be. As long as you have set up mail forwarding with fasthosts it will be delievered as normal.
No mate, when you send an email it's sent to two halfs - the command data is sent which determines where it's going and the message data is then sent but that only determines what email address is shown in the remote client..Originally posted by computerman
When a user gets an email will it show my email my address (E.g. computerman@mydomain.ltd.uk)?
For example, when you connect to the mail server it would look like this:
In the example above, you'd probably expect the mail to be sent to domain3 and the sender to show domain4 - well that's half wrong.. The mail would be sent to domain2, and the sender would show as domain4 - the line containing domain1 is ignored, but the email client at the remote end will show the destination address as domain3 - confused yet?!Code:220 Mail Relay Service ESMTP (cerberus.uk.clara.net) Mail From: aido@domain1.co.uk 250 <aido@domain1.co.uk> is syntactically correct Rcpt To: aido@domain2.co.uk 250 <aido@domain2.co.uk> is syntactically correct Data 354 Enter message, ending with "." on a line by itself To: aido@domain3.co.uk From: aido@domain4.net Subject: Arse Date : 12 Apr 2004 18:58 . 250 OK id=1959eF-000Mvg-00 quit 221 cerberus.uk.clara.net closing connection
Clara for example use an X-Envelope-To header to determine the exact address it's bound for although the email program will show only the headers from within the message body..
Mail clients only process the message shown after the Data command - the rest is ignored - that's why you use your ISP email server to send mail (it recognises you by doing a reverse DNS query on your IP and checking it's allowed to relay external mail)....
