Default Installing Windows on remote machine via VNC - How?

    Hi,

I've got 2 computers, I use one as a workstation and one as a file/FTP server. It's about time I formatted and reinstalled Windows on my server (currently running Windows 2000 but I haven't decided between 2000 or XP for the reinstall yet).

I currently remotely access my server from my workstation via TightVNC which is a good solution because I only have one monitor, no KVM switch and I can't be arsed swapping cables about!

Is it possible to do a clean format/install on my server using VNC? If so, how? If not, is there another method that I could use without having to connect my monitor to my server?

    Cheers m'dears,

I suppose you could stick your Windows CD in, and then create an answer file on a floppy so you won't need the monitor. It'll all be in the help files if you look under unattended installation.

I understand what you're saying but once Windows has been installed how do I get the VNC server installed and running on my file server so I can access it via the VNC client on my workstation?

    MAte, what about Dameware?

    www.dameware.com

It will automatically copy and install the remote control software on the other PC once Windows is up and on the network...

In conjunction with the sif file you could use to install windows you'd be sorted....

Free 30 day eval as well..

    It's ace!

Cheers mate, never heard of Dameware until now...looks good

Both my workstation and server have public fixed IP addresses - is this going to prove a problem once Windows has been installed when it comes to accessing the file server over the network or is the IP config handled by the SIF file?

You put it in the SIF file mate

Itjust assigns those settings to the first NIC it finds along with all the other settings

Could take a while to write it but once it's done you can use it for good....
