Default Pentium 4 vs. Pentium 4 M CENTRINO

    Hi,

Can someone explain to me if there are any performance advantages with a P4 M CENTRINO. I am thinking of getting an IBM T40 – it comes with a P4M 1.6 Ghz. However I can get a ThinkPad P4 2Ghz T30.

Is the Centrino chip faster or the same.

    Thanks in advance.

The P-M 1.6ghz will perform as well as a P4 2.4Ghz. This is due to the P4 M being optimised with the mb chipset. Only if the Notebook has the P-M and Intel 855PM chipset and the philips 802.11b wireless inbuilt can it be called centino.

The cpu's with P4 M are the old mobile cpu's (not the same thing)

The other advantage of centrino is a longer battery life and cooler cpu (so less chance of burning your legs lol)

The best centino kit I have seen is the new Toshiba M10. (prob costs less than the ibm too).

    See here

    I don't think so somehow.
The M denotes a mobile CPU which will:

A: Offers power saving features not found on a desktop CPU
B: Always be slightly slower than it's desktop counterpart

Also, please feel free to explain how a 1.6GHz CPU will perform just as quickly as a 2.4GHz model

The way the P-M cpu work more efficiently is because is has been optimised to work with the specific chipset.

New micro architecture including power optimized 400 MHz processor system bus, Micro-Ops Fusion and Dedicated Stack Manager for faster execut1on of instructions at lower power. And advanced instruction prediction to reduce re-dos for increased performance.

Support for Enhanced Intel SpeedStep® technology w/ multiple voltage & frequency operating points, enabling a better match of performance to application demand

Support for Intel® Mobile Voltage Positioning, which dynamically lowers voltage based on processor activity to lower thermal design power enabling smaller notebooks.

1MB power managed L2 cache increasing system performance.

Intel® Centrino™ mobile technology is designed to meet the needs of your multi-tasking, constantly-computing lifestyle—and to work with the performance demands of future applications.

Move between a multimedia slideshow and a home video with ease thanks to technology that offers faster execut1on of instructions at lower power. Intel Centrino mobile technology also features advanced instruction prediction to eliminate CPU process replication, and second-generation Streaming SIMD Extensions (Streaming SIMD Extensions 2) with instructions integrated into the software to enhance performance.

    Thanks guy’s for the responses.

I have read in various articles that the Intel® Centrino™ does outperform its equivalent counter part.

    However I am still confused

Basically it isn't faster as 1.6ghz is slower than 2.4ghz. But it is more effiecient so can do more each clock cycle.

This is where I get confused – if the M is more efficient than the normal chip and say it does 2 instructions per cycle – doesn’t that make it double the speed – so a 1.6 is equivalent to a 3?
