EXCLUSIVE: Blair to reward Campbell with peerage

ALASTAIR Campbell is to become a Lord, paving the way for his return to front-line politics.

The Prime Minister's spin doctor is set to be among the names in the New Year's Honours List, according to Downing Street sources.

The job-switch to the House of Lords would allow Campbell to return as a key member of Tony Blair's inner circle.

He announced on Friday that he would quit within the next few weeks as the PM's £131,000-a-year communications director.

But Campbell has told friends he wants to stay "very much involved" with politics and help steer Mr Blair to a third election victory.

The Prime Minister will also continue to call on Campbell for advice and has asked him to keep in close contact with Number Ten.

Campbell was initially doubtful about accepting a peerage and taking his seat in the House of Lords.

But allies of the spin chief believe he has been persuaded to accept the honour by the PM.

The peerage would allow Campbell to spend more time with his partner Fiona Millar and their three children, as well as pursuing a host of money-spinning interests.

A Government source said: "Becoming a Lord would mean Alastair can return as part of Tony Blair's tight circle of trusted advisers.

"The Prime Minister believes in keeping his most loyal supporters close at hand. Making someone like Alastair a Lord is the easiest way of doing it. A peerage is on offer to him whenever he wants it."

The honour is certain to spark fresh accusations of cronyism against the PM.

Mr Blair has already dished out peerages to close friends like his ex-flatmate Lord Falconer, now Lord Chancellor, and Baroness Morgan who is his political secretary. But he is determined to ride out the storm and pave the way for Campbell's return to a key political role ahead of the next general election.

Campbell is considering a host of new ventures for his new life after nine years at Mr Blair's side.

The former journalist is also preparing to make a number of lucrative speeches on the American lecture circuit with fees of up to £30,000 a time.

He is understood to have already opened talks with the prestigious Harry Walker Agency which boasts it can "deliver the most illustrious speakers of our time" like ex-Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter.

A host of television companies are feverishly trying to persuade Campbell to front prime-time shows and view him as a "star of the future", according to industry insiders.

He also plans to write a regular sports column and feature articles for newspapers and magazines.

He has already let it be known that he will also use his diaries to publish a book - which could be worth up to £5million - about his time with the PM.

But Campbell has insisted the book will not appear in the near future, probably not until Mr Blair leaves Downing Street.

Yesterday he dodged waiting television crews outside his North London home as he went for his usual early morning jog across Hampstead Heath.

Later, he headed north to the Turf Moor stadium of his beloved Burnley to watch the side he has supported for years play Crewe Alexandra.
