    Default Villa On The Up?

    VILLA CONFIRM TALKS WITH INVESTORS

Aston Villa have confirmed discussions have been held with representatives of potential major investors in the club.
Villa chairman Doug Ellis received approaches by telephone in July from intermediaries acting on behalf of parties interested in acquiring shares in the company and the club have revealed that further talks have now taken place.

A statement to the Stock Exchange read: "The directors of Aston Villa PLC announced on July 14, 2003 that the chairman had received unsolicited approaches by telephone from intermediaries acting for parties who might be interested in acquiring shares in the company.

"Those calls were speculative in nature and no further details were available at that date.

"In the light of further media speculation, the directors can confirm that discussions have now been held with intermediaries acting on behalf of one of
    the parties.

"However, details of the principals concerned or sufficient evidence of the firm availability of funds have still not been received. Accordingly, the directors conclude that any such interest continues to be treated as highly speculative."

Venezuelan billionaire Gustavo Cisneros was linked with the club after he reportedly lost out to Roman Abramovich to acquire Chelsea.

Sports lawyer Mel Goldberg was believed to be representing Cisneros in discussions with Ellis.

However, he denied any link to Cisneros in a statement to the Press Association on July 25, though admitted he was working on behalf of "a South American group" to acquire shares in a major club.

    BUY BUY DEADLY

Billionaire flies in today to take over at Villa

VENEZUELAN billionaire Gustavo Cisneros will fly into England today to launch a £50m takeover of Aston Villa - after failing to buy Tottenham.

Villa chairman Doug Ellis last night cleared the way for talks with the consortium bankrolled by Cisneros, whose personal wealth rivals Chelsea tycoon Roman Abramovich.

Cisneros, who also missed out on a takeover bid for Chelsea this summer, is understood to have made enquiries about Tottenham which were knocked back by their board. White Hart Lane chairman Daniel Levy is poised to take the club back into private ownership to stop a takeover bid - even though their fans have been left jealous of Abramovich's spending power at Chelsea.

Former FIFA referee Francisco Farias, one of Cisneros's right-hand men, has conducted the negotiations through sports lawyer Mel Goldberg, who believes the takeover could be completed early next week.

Cisneros's wealth rivals Abramovich's £4billion assets as he owns stakes in Coca-Cola, Pizza Hut, the country's biggest supermarket chain, is a media magnate and a potential presidential candidate.

Villa's property assets are worth around £70m and several foreign consortiums have made enquiries about a takeover.

Ellis, 80, who yesterday chaired a stormy shareholders' meeting, said: "What I will say to these people is put your money where your mouth is. Until that happens I will continue to run the club in the best interests of everyone concerned at Aston Villa."

The Venezuelans are understood to have offered Ellis a place on the board even if the takeover goes ahead, so he can retain his 20-year association with the club.

Villa yesterday reported the interest to the Stock Exchange, but it is understood Ellis wants further assurances and proof of the consortium's wealth before proceeding further with negotiations.

That is why Cisneros will make assurances the consortium will have millions to support the takeover, while Farias will take charge of the club on a day-to-day basis.
