    Western digitals still the fastest/noisest
    Maxtors almost as fastest/fairly quiet
    IBMs are to be avoided
Seagates the slowest but most reliable.

Take your pick but if your a silent fan Seagates are top class.

When my HDD died on me I bought a Maxtor HDD and it was as loud as a jet engine (no joke!)! I could hardly think cos of the noise! So I took it back and got me the Western Digital that I have now, and it's very quiet! The only thing you can hear is when the drive is being accessed (as with all HDD's), it's not loud, just your standard sound!

Im sure yours was a one off m8

WD are the best but due to speed they pay the price with a slightly louder whine, Maxtors are quietish... Seagates/Samsungs are the quietest.

Most proberly wont be able to tell the difference between WD/Maxtor noise wise, but Seagate definatly... I can assure u Seagate Barracuda IV is the quietest drive. Even the newer models are lounder.

Proofs here with Maxtor drivers, + u can search Cudda IV everyone says its the quietest

maxtor make some of the quietest drives around, and mine doesnt make any noise when it is being acessed so it isnt "all hard drives"but in saying that my maxtor packed in, and altough they sent a new one on warranty i had to resintall everything and i also had to type in all my folio stuff for english again.

western digital are definitly the best, but maxtor is their main rival and both companies are pretty darn good

IBM 180GXP, not only the fastest IDE hd available but also one of the cheapest. Have installed well over a dozen in system builds and not had a single problem with any of them.

Stay well away from anything with IBM Darkstar on it.

    These should be renamed Deathstar!!

We bought loads in as cheap alternates to 'REAL' hard drives and evey single one of them has popped in the past 3 weeks.

(I honestly think it's the cold weather kicking in)

IBM GXP's all the way for me.

Maxtor were shit when I was doing allot of PC building.

TBH I think its a matter of personal preferece, get a bad batch of one disks and you never use that manufacturer again lol.
