Valve Confirms Half-Life 2 Code Exposure. - Rhoam
Managing Director Gabe Newell of Valve Software confirmed on Halflife2.net that the source code for one of the most anticipated titles in recent history, Half-Life 2, has been stolen and posted on the internet.
According to Newell, the company has been the victim of a concerted attack by infiltrators using denial of service attacks and keystroke recorders to penetrate the network and copy the source tree for Half-Life 2.
"What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, helpvalve@valvesoftware.com. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great.�

if it delays the release the culprits will have a lot more to worry about than valve ... imagine having the entire pc owning gameplaying world baying for your blood

this probably is the very reason the game has been delayed.

some of the function headers in the source code contain various spoilers about the game. Different enemies and their actions and behaviours, weapons, player actions, etc.

Well wasnt it so they detected the intrusion before the delay? As the delay reason was due to the intrusion of the hackers and having to modify parts of the source codes?

In contrast to all those that see this as bad, I will just :thumbs , finally something to read :nowords: with thaking C courses

I cant see this being the cause of any delays - the source code is mainly the physics engine and modeller - these part would not be changed just becase uncomplied code has been released. I heard that they are looking to do an a world wide (europe, us, asia) release at the same time and want to code in all the extra languages and voice's prior to release (could be horseshit) but I am more inclinded to believe it than any of the hacking that has happened.

Well Im not going to buy HL2 via steam that is for sure or have it running with all its function open, hm ah well I guess only Valve will know for sure....

Anyways a demo would be nice as GT4 will have a demo because it was delayed.

I'm pretty sure the leaked code contains steam source code.
still fancy putting your credit card details through that when you buy hl2 now?

anyways, I'm trying not to give a crap about the release. it's done when it's done. sooner or later we'll eventually get to play it.

I am sure that Half Life 2 will be a awsome game, but I am sure delaying the release is a PR tactic, more peple will talk about it rant and moan about
it the more people want it and the more exposure it gets.

Aslo this means a release closer to christmas so they will fly off the shelves when everyone goes into mad christmas shopping frenzy mode.
They are trying to get everyone talking about it - and its worked, to maximise
sales as everyone knows the bulk of sales is in the first few months of release.

I am sure it is ready to go now.

Halo 2 (for Xbox) is 100% ready also, but Miscrosoft are holding on to it and will only release it when the bulk of there xbox live customers renew
there subs!

Even some friends of mine who dont even have PC's are starting to ask
about when / if its coming out on consoles etc!

Yeah. f*ck Valve. They been pissing on us about the release date from day one. Who cares that someone posted the source code on the Net. Will just give them more of an excuse not to release it till next autumn.

The whole thing smells of BS, blame yet another delay on anyone but themselves. The rumours of bad performance on Nvidia cards (whoops!) might just have been true. Shame, I was really looking forward to this one! the whole thing just seems a bit too convenient and if their security and housekeeping (back ups?) are this bad nobody is going to pay online!
