house alarm system

Hi all,
I'm looking for a decent house alarm system. Something quite good. Can I have your recomendations. How good are the wireless/solar alarms ? should I stick to hardwired ? How ong do the batteries last?
Please list where they can be purchased. London based primarily.

b&q do wireless alarms and as far as i can tell ther pretty good i bought the one with the telephone dialer i had to get a couple of extra sensors and remotes so the bill came to 240 quid but saying that i when't to my local alarm trade shop and they quoted me 300 quid plus vat for a lesser wireless system
a few people i know have these wireless systems and are pleased with them
can't tell you about battery life yet as mines not been in that long but so far so good
