I wasnt into the scene but was interested enough to pick up a scanner from maplins.. managers special yupitero 7100 for £125 ( 1/2 price) good scanner, picks up local police stuff , some neighbours phone calls (!) and few other bits, there are plenty of cheaper scanners out there, get one & start scanning

for some frequencies try - http://www.transmission1.net/uksfd/list_active.asp
not been updated since feb 03 but a good start

Wasnt i the one saying that scanners are out of date, I.E. scanners were good in the 80's but arent much use in the 21st century.:nowords:

Most of the stuff thats actually interesting (ie police) is or has moved to encrypted digital equipment, a lot of forces do still use the system but as soon as anything interesting happens they switch to mobile phones.

Gents, thanks for the help, I`m after something that will pick up military stuff (planes and the like)

Going spying up at RAF Machrinhanish (spelt wrong i know !!) long story....... dont ask.

Anyway, got a cracking pair of binos for £160 about 2 years ago when I went to Area 51 and now I`m after something that will let me listen to the pilots speaking.

    Cheers

Scanners can be updated with s.ware to overcome encryption, they can also pick up remote cameras. Scanners are still very much used, it's just a little bit more expensive to keep up with.

If you are looking for a scanner - get one that allows you to hook up to a frequency counter (Optoelectronics) as example

I have my scanner hooked up to this and it auto tunes into and transmission that the counter tunes into - it is worth having a high dB antenna on both bits of kit

I have an AR8000??? Sorry it has been a long time, not sure if it is an 8000 or not hooked up to the counter.

There are some newer scanners in the market that have this feature built in - but price is the issue.

Buy a copy Shortwave and I am sure it will help you out

    Hope this helps

Thanks for the update, much appreciated m8.

I wasnt having a go at the mod as such, it just I asked for help and didnt really seem to get a great deal.

I understand its not the most used board on the forum, maybe I was expecting a goal rush of replies.

    No harm done I hope.

    Cheers for advice
