    Default Claranews is crap (again)

Looks like it's gone tits up again. No new posts for ages on a.b.movies.divx, which i can't believe as it's a pretty busy group

Any one else having the same problems?

My advice is to dump Claranews m8, I have. They don't give a flying f**k about their customers and in fact seem to find customers something of an irritation.

They also don't seem to give a f**k about repeat business or their reputation, I've emailed them countless times about the news service and how shit its been over the last month or so and they don't even have the decency to reply. When you call their customer service line they claim that they know nothing of the problems with their news service and direct you to the claranet.news-service ng where they claim technical staff from clara will post updates, developments and answers to peoples queries, well that's a fukin joke, the clara tech staff post to that group about once every 6 months and when they do they don't seem to know what the f**k is going on with their own servers.

Clara really are shite. My advice would be sign up with one of the US based providers like Astraweb or Useneteserver, I have an annual account with clara which I only renewed in July, but I'm writing the £99 off as a loss and have signed up with astraweb.com for $15 a month. They seem ok so far, its an unlimited account with 4 connections up to 2mb/sec, retention is 10 days and they seem to have little or no incompletes. I've only been with them a few days so its too early to tell if they are any good, but the early signs are promising.

I signed up with astraweb two days ago, jesus i thought clara were bad, their service is even worse.
I am lucky to get my speed up to 15k, and it keeps dropping to sod all and times out and dissconcts me.
Looks like i have wasted a months sub, waiting for an e-mail back now.

Astraweb are fine for me, with my 4 connections I'm getting 480k/s sometimes drops but usually constant, fine for a.b.dvdr and a.b.dvd

There status page says they upgrading today and mau cause instability

I can't d/l a single 14meg rar, it times out and throws me off. Thats with four connections at once. When it trys to reconnect it won't let me back because it says i allready have the max number of connections, i have to wait for it to time out at ther end. When i ping their server it's around 500ms, a touch high i think :coffee: So much for the gigabit connections they advertise. If the problem is at my end i can't think what it is.

Clara on the other hand is very fast, such a shame there is nothing complete on there at the moment.

I got Grabbit and Agent on my pc at the moment. Clara works fine on both bits of soft, Astraweb does not. The server name i put in is news.astraweb.com , i think that is the right one.
I have tried some different groups too, just updateing a.b.sounds.mp3.complete_cd, and it's peaking at 25k, usually around 15-19k.
Been through the settings, can't think what it could be. It updates groups ok, slowly though, but trying to drop anything is a no go, just time outs or tells me it aint on the server.

Must be me, i got the anti-midas touch. Everything i touch turns to shite LOL

Are you on Plusnet by any chance urbs?, they had a problems this afternoon, they lost a couple of links.

I have done speed tests with sites here and in the states. I get full speed for uk stuff, but only 236k max on anything stateside (i'm on 512 adsl). I wonder if this is owt to do with it?

Like i said too, big pings on anything over there.

I'm using newsbin pro, I dont know if your using those mentioned urbsy but I'd download the trial of newsbin pro and try that, I know peeps for the last week or so have been saying that they are getting article not on server but it says on there status page that if you retry 10 minutes later all will be well.
I'd put in down to the soft, if your playing with binaries you want software that is made for that, agent is ok but not specifically for binaries and grabbit I have heard is pretty buggy, isnt it free. All I can say is what works for me, try it you never know.
ps. try the test server with the soft your using, I dont know if it's still working as it was only temporary but the address is
    unlimited-test.news.astraweb.com
pps must have wrote this the same time as col, I'd get on to plusnet that may be the problem

The test server is the same m8, dops headers slowly and times out on the files. I will wait to see what astraweb say, maybe it's a +net problem though, still getting ping of 200+ to the states.

News bin pro :nowords: i tried that once and tbh i found it very awkward to use, must be the most complicated news reader there is.
I might give it another go, well maybe lol.

Newsin pro is quite simple to use m8, just spend a little time getting used to it. I've been getting a constant 480k/s from astraweb for last 24hours, and in last few days I've grabbed over 15Gb worth of goodies, which on a 512k/s connection ain't too bad. Plus I've found the retention on astraweb to be far better than clara.

how is it today? I've just updated the headers for dvdr and its steady just above 1mb and it's only meant to be half that. It seems other people are having the problems you mention while people from the same area arnt, pretty strange.

Just dropping a film off a.b.movies.divx, and it seems to be sorted. Pretty much maxing me out with two connections, so fingers crossed all is well.
Astraweb never replied to my problems though, are they normally ok?, they seem to get good reviews everywhere.
I put newsbin back on my machine, had a quick go, i will have to spend time with it, still looks hard. The thing i don't like is when you close it it loses all the headers, and you have to connect it and download them to see them again. Seems quick to drop new headers though.
Anyway.. back to my leeching :whistle

Im gonna give em the benefit of the doubt for a week or so .
At times they look really good , but at times they really are slow.

At this moment me and my 2mb line are swayed to clara.
