Default USB won't work, brand new laptop... HELP??

Hi there. Any help here would be appreciated.
Brand new laptop, toshiba a30 with usb 2 and firewire.

OK, the problem is that the USB drivers won't install. Howeverr, going into device manager I find that there's two sets of UBS controllers, one installed, one with a question mark beside it. I've attached a screen shot of this...

Also, it's probably related to the usb thing, but the infra red port isn't working either. This is probably cos when I try to install the software for the IR port (called SMSC IrCC) I just get the error message that the software couln't be installed cos the hardware isn't present.

Toshiba support want me to send the laptop back to them.... **** that, I need it badly right now cos of me deadlines!

    Can anyone help please?

Have you tried re-installing the drivers?
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

    Try letting Windows redetect them:

    Disconnect USB devices
Remove all USB entries and IR entries from Device Manager
    Restart

    HTH

you have to install service pack 1 or 2 if it's out for the driver's for USB 2.0.

As it's new, I can't see Toshiba releasing a laptop without the drivers for the hardware present - so presumably the USB drivers are stored on the system somewhere, thus reinstalling as mentioned before should do the job unless the system has been reinstalled without the manufacturers original recovery media.

Infra red has prolly been disabled in the BIOS if it's not there in Dev Man at all by now. To check press F2 on startup and go to the advanced section.
