Default Windows XP carshes my games...

My problem is that any time im playing a game (eg, Need for speed Underground, Hidden and Dangerous 2, Rainbow Six Raven Shield) they randomly crash to the desktop with no error message. All my games are installed with full installation and have the latest patch along with the NoCD patch.

My PC spec is as follows:

    Intel D845GBV Motherboard,
Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz 400MHz 512k Cache Retail Boxed Processor,
    512mb DDR333 PC2700 DIMM RAM,
Nvidia GeForce 4 ti4200 128mb RAM (with newest nvidia 52.16 drivers),
20gb Hard Drive (Contains OS and programs),
80gb Hard Drive (Contains all games and 1150mb Page File),
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 Operating System.

Im praying that someone here has encounted the same problem or has come across it before and has found or knows of a way to fix this. Cause there is nothing more annoying then getting so far in a game then it crashes and you have to do it again.

Thanks your any help in advance,

    Mark

    mark,

ive had some of the probs u describe.

update all your device drivers to those of the manufacturer, and not the microsoft ones.

run a registry check (a coupld of threads on this forums talk about tools).

make sure have ample hdd space.

    how fast are your drives?
    33/66/100/133?

None of the above work so i had a long hard think about it and opt'd for a full format and a fresh installation of window xp pro.

Hopefully this will solve my problem, otherwise i dont know.

I think the format/ reinstall it a good move - if it still does it I would look at the cooling of your Graohics card and cpu - when I upgraded my Ti4200 and removed it from my PC there was so much dust & crap on the fan I reckon it was running about 50% as well as it should.

After Formating and then re-installing everything with there correct manufacturers latest updates, i tried Need For Speed Underground and to my amazement it continues to crash randomly. So i took the Graphics card out and got rid of all the dust, but it still crashes.

Anyone else got any types that i could try???

    Cheers

its not faulty memory maybe ? - if you have more than one mem chip try running with one in one out and vice versa - or if possible borrow some from a mate to test it.

fe_man2000 i havent yet tried the ram idea you stated but wil do very shortly. But also a couple of times i have had the blue error screen come up and the last time it did i managed to catch what it said, which was something to do with "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT".

This meesage has come about twice while playing the game, but also a couple of times when im doing normal things, like internet, etc.

Do you think its connected??? Do you think its to do with RAM or virtual memory???

NB: Ive got the Virtual memory set to 1500 to 1536 on the C drive and 1500 to 1536 on the D drive so thats a minimum total of bout 3000mb. I turned it up to see if i would cure the problem but i think ill turn it down seeing as its not done any different, well nothing good.

    Cheers

its wont be virtual ram - this is just a swopdisk area windows uses to store temp files while it works. I think its a hardware issue as you have reinstalled windows already which, in theory, eliminates most software issues. Checking the RAM is always a good thing to do as if it is faulty your PC can crash under a lot of different circumstances which may appear to be unconnected.

Another thing to try is straight after you have had a crash - reboot and enter the bios - check the temperature reading to see if anything is running hot.

Ive just taken my front cover off and found that the front fan had a complete layer of dust which i reckon had completely stop air getting in, ive cheared that and reamoved preety must all the dust from the fans.

I then decided to move the sound card from PCI slot 2 to PCI slot 6 which is at the bottom as before it was right below the graphics card which i thought could be restricting the air flow to the graphics card.

I then rebooted and i was playing music for about 20 minutes when suddenly again the blue screen appears but is displaying a different message, this time its "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

    Whats that all about???

Do you still reckon its the ram???

    Cheers for all your help,

    Mark

Thanks for the info, but i tried something from one of the sites and the PC crashed and came up with the same message every time when i re-booted that the file hal.dll was corrupted. I formated again and re-installed everything but this time im only running one stick of RAM, lets see and hope that solves my problem.

    Cheers

Do you have enough power running to your pc? Not sure if youve made your own and not added a big enough psu or added to a bought pc that was using all the power to start with.

I was getting this problem with my Radeon 9700 pro. Changed PSU and it fixed it - worth a try
