I currently have a pc fan just hooked to the back of my modded xbox and i was wondering if i really need it. I ask this becuz it is really noisy and just kind of annoying.

I have an modded xbox with a chameleon chip.
I get no heat prob's at all.
I cant speak for anyone else but i have never herd anyone having any heat prob's out of the people i know with modded xboxes.
The only thing you can do is try it and see, disconnect the fan and see if you start getting any probs. :nowords:
If you do just turn your xbox off and re-connect the fan.
Sorry for the shite answer :| but that is what I would do with it mate.
If you want the rainbow you have to put up with the rain....... do you know which philosopher said that? Dolly Parton.... and people say she is just a big pair of tit's!!

what is it with people who have modded there xbox and the need to add extra cooling ? - I met someone last weekend who had an extra cooling unit from japan! fitted to a non modded box when I asked him about it he told me he had been advised it would run better/longer. Personally I have had an xbox from day 1 in the UK and I have modded a load and busted a few, fixed a few, fitted HDD's in a few etc etc and I have never ever seen an over heating issue ever! My xbox sits on top of my Home cinema amp which getts pretty hot and it has a 60gig HDD in it and I play it for hour on end with no issues, its possible to overheat an xbox in theory, but its only running a 700mhz CPU.
EvilSloth - Why did you fit the fan, were you having issues or was it because you were advised it was a good idea ? If its the latter I say remove it and see how you go mate.
cheers

I put the fan on because orginally i was told that overheating could possibly be an issue.....so i figured better be safe with something so expensive... but i myself dont think i really need it.
peopl;e used to say xboxes overheated with 7200 rpm hard drives but ven this doesnt happen much if ever
people just worry too much because its based on a pc a modchip doesnt add anything ecept a little pcb board, that doesnt add heat
Take it off for a few days and see what happens - nothing is what I suspect will happen. Xbox was designed to have enough cooling as it is and you can enjoy the silence (well as silent as the xbox gets with its other fans!!)
Cheers

xboxes have an auto shutdown if they do overheat anyway, like feman says, ive fitted endless chips, i even have cold cathodes n stuff in mine and heat has never been an issue.
one thing you should take care of is dust tho, i got a machine in yesterday and the dvd drive was dead, when i opened it up there was tons of dust in there
yeh overheating is bolix.
