Default XP Pro Boot Up Error!

    Hi Guys,

I am running Xp Pro, For as long as I can remember I've had a small nag with booting up XP. The problem seems to be, jus before the XP Logo screen comes on just before it goes into my desktop, I get the following screen ( See attached Image < This saves me trying to explain >

My Pc will stay like this until an option is used, I just press enter every time to load as mornal, and everything else with my PC seems fine, Anyone have any ideas on what this can be about? Also how to get rid of it?

    Many Thanks

This is the operating system boot menu!

For some reason windows XP things you have two versions of windows installed and it asking you which one to load?

You can change the options by...

    Going into Control Panel

    Click on "system" icon

    Click on "Advanced" tab

click on "startup and Recovery" (setttings tab)

you should then get all the options to change the boot menu

i've said this before in another thread - that is the sucky way of doing it that doesnt make you look smart. if you want to look smart manually edit the config file like so (if you mess it up then you will look very unsmart)

then set the check boxes so that you untick "Hide protected operating system files" there might be a warning that comes up. you can always change it back later.

load up boot.ini which should be on your C: drive. you might need to right click and chose properties so that it is not read only.

edit the line timeout=something so that it says timeout=0

    then save and reboot.

be careful. do not mess up this file. if you do then you can do a repair with the winxp install cd

i recommend that you change the setting in the folder optinons back to hide the files again afterwords cos then you cant accidentaly delete them and stuff.

(if you mess something up then dont blame me )

lol. if you lose that file or something goes wrong then you could edit that file with a dos bootdisk (if you use a fat32 filsys) and with the winxp install repair console (i think) wheras the gui way you couldnt.

also if you are like me and have your files shown already and all the options set so you can edit it then it is quicker too, as well as being more powerful cos you can add options and stuff.

plus there's an Edit button on the startup and recovery dialog box which launches notepad on boot.ini anyway, so you can start out the sucky way then at the last minute suddenly look smart after all

    d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

installs the command console as a boot option to run off your hdd, comes in real handy if you've got a buggered windows install on an ntfs partition.

means you don't have to spend hours looking for a scratched cd that don't work.

    well, does me anyway... lol
