I think it is pot luck... All the new machines might have samsung drives... but there is always a chance that they sell you an older machine.

Bought 2 just before xmas both with samsung drive from game.
I bought 2 last month. The 1st one for my nephews Christmas present from Dixons in the UK and that had a Samsung drive and a 2nd one from a shop in Sweden for myself which had a Phillips drive in it. Luckily I know a guy in town who mods xboxs and he had a couple with Samsung drives in so I swapped the drive over. Can't remember the manufacture date of the one I bought my nephew but mine was November 2003.
Just be glad you did'nt get a xbox with a new phillips drive in it!They don't read at least 99% of the dvd'rs out there and if you try to adjust the laser it burn's out the drive and does'nt even read original's, last two x-boxes that came to me both had these phillips drives in.
bought an Xbox 2 weeks ago from Amazon, got a Samsung drive
jesus, would you go sick if that happened, id be guttedOriginally Posted by sanj

Chipped a V1.5 with Focus video chip last week and it had a Philips in it. I found last week that the grey Datawrite disks and Bulcpac orange disks that work great in my plain old vanilla Thompson drive every time, would not work on any samsung drive I tried and were realy dodgy in the Philips one mentioned above so its swings and roundabouts with drives reading in DVDr the only bonus with the Samsung and the Philips is they play CDr.
Bulkpaq orange work sound in my Sammy drive xbox, I just put games that are about 2gb in size on them, anything that is a full dvd I put on ritek but at about £12 for 25 of the bulkpaq tangos then it's all good with me. Never tried the grey Datawrite ones though.
My original Phillips drive I had in my xbox before I swapped it would not read any kind of CDR.
I wouldnt bover with the greys I just stick to the Datawrite yellows for Sammys and Philips and Tango Bulqpaq for myself as they work fine in my Tommy and are a fantastic price at the moment. The Philips drive I had this week played cheapo shit cdr's I installed slayers 2.5 from one.
ive upgraded about 50 of these since xmas most are sammys the rest have mostly been thomsons with very few philips i wonder if they are droping these drives
